Function of Beauty Review: I Built My Dream Hair Care Solution

Picture 1

As someone with oily, coily, and frizzy hair, I’m more than familiar with the hair care struggle.

It seems like no matter how much money you’re willing to spend on specialty products, nothing really gets me, at least not entirely. That’s why my beauty bin is filled to the brim with different products for different purposes.

Thankfully, there’s another way. Just like we saw with skincare over the last few years, the rise of customizable hair care is finally here. The idea behind Function of Beauty is that you should be able to build your own shampoo and conditioner in three easy steps. It also has some really unique extras to customize, like determining if you want it to be scented, how strong or mild the scent should be, and even what color it should be.

It’s an exciting idea, and it could push me out of my old hair care ways.

What’s All the Buzz About?

If you follow just about any beauty bloggers or fashion news sites, you’ve definitely come across Function of Beauty. This company made waves a few years ago when they launched their online store, becoming one of the first hair care businesses to provide completely customizable shampoo and conditioner. Not long after that, they found an exclusive space on Target shelves nationwide, bringing their bespoke beauty philosophy to even more people.

The idea is simple: hair care should accommodate your individual needs without sky-high prices or overly complicated customization processes. Because Function of Beauty offers such a powerful hair care solution and puts ease of access above everything else, we’re hearing more hype than ever. But is it really all that it’s cracked up to be?

How Does it Work?

Function of Beauty makes customization easy. Using their website, you’ll find a quick hair quiz that has you fill in information about your hair type and needs. Once you’re done, they’ll match you with a great shampoo and conditioner duo, and then you can begin further customizing it to your exact taste.

It’s all pretty simple: to start, you choose your base. These are the pure shampoo and conditioners, each of which focuses on a different hair type, including straight, wavy, curly, and coily. While most hair care products stop here, Function of Beauty takes it further by letting you choose up to three booster shots for your bases. You have ten to choose from, each targeting a unique hair need such as strengthening, lengthening, thermal protection, volumizing, curl definition, scalp soothing, and plenty more.

When you’re ready to use your shampoo and conditioner, you simply mix in your booster shots to your bases, shake, and that’s it. It’s a quick process to get a hair care solution tailored to your needs—and it doesn’t cost nearly as much as other specialty brands. Better yet, Function of Beauty can evolve with you. As your hair needs change, you can find new booster shots that give you exactly what you need. Or, you can just have fun experimenting with all of the options! According to the website, there are thousands of possible combinations.

But Does it Work?

As I mentioned earlier, I have some super high-maintenance hair. Since my hair is prone to getting frizzy, I have to stock up on no-frizz shampoo. But since my hair also tends to be oily, those moisture-oriented, no-frizz shampoos are just too much for me. To make things more complicated, I have really coily hair. Finding one product that can meet all of these needs has been impossible. But with Function of Beauty, I’m able to build on myself.

I used the bases for coily hair, and chose the booster shots for anti-frizz, oil control, and thermal protection. I loved that my shampoo and conditioner were silicone-free, paraben-free, and 100% vegan. And I could even remove the fragrance (even though they have some great all-natural scents, I’m just not a fan of scented products). Points all around for that.

After a week of using my Function of Beauty formula, I noticed significant results. The anti-frizz started working pretty much immediately. The oil control started working after a few uses. And the thermal protection was wonderful, making me feel a lot better about plugging in my iron for my morning hair routine. At the end of the day, I’m thrilled that Function of Beauty worked as I wanted it to, and I’m happy to clear out some of those extra specialty products that just didn’t cut it.

Does it Live Up to the Hype?

Absolutely. We loved Function of Beauty and felt that it struck just the right balance between accessibility and customization. It isn’t so nuanced that it’s intimidating for newer users, and it isn’t so general that it fails to accommodate your hair’s unique needs. It’s just right. Mix that in with the freedom to choose all sorts of great scents, colors, and booster shots, and it’s no wonder why everyone’s talking about Function of Beauty.
