Veronica D’Souza’s musical expression is profoundly influenced by her work as an activist, entrepreneur, and women’s rights advocate. Now, with the release of “A Mountain,” Veronica D’Souza weaves together a narrative of hope, kindness, and freedom. Drawing from her Indian, East African, and Danish heritage, Veronica’s genre-blending artistry reflects her experiences as a changemaker.
“Instead of asking for a seat at the table, this song is asking for new tables”, states Veronica when asked about the inspiration behind the song. “It’s asking for tables where magic, feminine energy, nature, collaboration and friendships rule. And it’s asking for gatekeepers to step down from the boardrooms to give space for a new world grounded in values of equity, stewardship, and collectivity. Our future depends on making space for those who build from a different set of rules”, she further explains.
The video for “A Mountain,” which was directed by D’Souza, features her young daughters and their friends. Mirroring the adolescent feeling of freedom, it represents how their generation will rule the world with kindness. Juxtaposed against those themes is the song’s more serious themes — painting a visual that is brimming with hope for a time when young girls can forge friendships and create their own paths, free from the pressure from societal and cultural systems.
The song, which D’Souza states is “dedicated to all young girls – dreaming of a new world order – for all of us,” is equal parts electrifying and empowering, with D’Sourza dreaming of a new world order where women are emboldened by a matriarchal society to pursue their dreams. The refrain of the song hears D’Souza repeat “I won’t be giving my whole life,” a powerful ode for anyone desperate to break free from the constraints society places on us.
“A Mountain” is out now.
