Will Factions of Sol Introduce a New Type of Table Game?

The recent revival enjoyed by table games has introduced many new players to the simple pleasures of sitting down and playing, whether it’s online or in a face-to-face setting. As one of the latest games in this genre to be launched, could Factions of Sol introduce a new way of playing?

All About the Game

Factions of Sol was funded on Kickstarter in just a few hours, so it’s already clear that there’s a lot of support out there for it. Created by Mark IV Games, it’s designed for up to four players and is an asymmetric strategy game where those players travel through our solar system to visit distant planets while trying to win control of space as one of eight rival factions.

Players need to look after their batteries carefully, as they need energy to move through the solar system. The cost to travel in different sections increases as a route becomes more popular, but the energy is removed from the board after each round. This adds up to a clever type of strategy game where players need to be constantly aware of what their opponents are doing.

Those backers who make a pledge to support this project will receive their game in September 2023 if everything goes according to the schedule. At the time of writing, over 400 people have backed the project and this has raised more than $34,000, which is close to double the original funding goal.

Will It Be a Success?

Table games are now more popular than ever before, so the creators of Factions of Sol will be hoping that it’s a hit with the public. Games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Chess and Monopoly show us how there’s a lot of variety in this market with many different types of game succeeding.

One of the keys to a board game’s success is that it has the right balance of simple gameplay with enough depth to allow a variety of strategies. We’ll need to wait to see if this new game gets the balance right, which is surely what they’re trying to do with their rules and the movement mechanic that’s in place.

This blend of simplicity and strategy can be seen in all the best table games. For example, a look at Catan strategies reveals that balancing resources and being aware of the odds of each number coming up are crucial elements, while a smart approach to trading is needed too. A solid strategy is also needed in those table games that we commonly see played in casinos, such as roulette, and this is undoubtedly part of their success too.

This strategy guide shows us that playing roulette well starts with choosing the right table from the American and European options. After that, setting a wagering limit and being aware of how many spins you play per hour are useful tips. However, it points out that you shouldn’t rely on progressive betting systems as a guarantee of winning.

If the gameplay on Factions of Sol proves to be right, this should prove to be another to add to the long list of popular table games.  However, it’s a hugely competitive market and we’ll need to wait a while longer to see if it gains enough support to make the breakthrough to the mainstream.
