Boy Afraid | Superstar Loser | Video Premiere

Boy Afraid unveils his debut single, "Superstar Loser."

What does it mean to be a superstar? Conversely, what does it mean to be a loser? These are the questions plaguing alternative rock artist Boy Afraid on his debut single, “Superstar Loser.” In a world where success is celebrated and fear isn’t discussed, Boy Afraid — the brainchild of artist Micky James — wants to explore why society puts pressure on our most beloved public figures, forcing them to shy away from being open about their failings.

“This track is about trying to live up to an image of success that feels impossible to sustain,” Boy Afraid explains when asked about the inspiration behind the song. “It’s funny and painful at the same time, because failure is a part of being human, but we’re all terrified of it.” With a knack for tongue-in-cheek lyricism, Boy Afraid blends moody atmospheres with jagged melodies and the unbridled energy of alt-rock, producing a sonic landscape that evokes the spirit of past alt-rock icons while boldly pushing the genre into new, uncharted territory.

Tapping into the song’s core ethos, the track’s visuals, premiering today on 1883, sees Boy Afraid dance and frolic around New York City in juxtaposed clips, unafraid of those passing by who gawk and sheepishly look away at the thought of being so carefree with oneself. In his own words: “BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE IPHONE HOLDER.”

“Superstar Loser” by Boy Afraid is out now.
