Stepping into the shoes of a popular character is a dream for any young, emerging actor. But what if you’re asked to play a version of the iconic, global superstar, Michael Jackson? Well, American actor Juliano Valdi was asked that very question. Valdi is playing a young version of Michael Jackson from The Jackson 5 era in the biopic, Michael, which lands in cinemas from tomorrow.
However, he’s already off to a great start in his career. Last year, Juliano was the lead voice in Neon’s animated sci-fi adventure flick, Arco, starring alongside Mark Ruffalo, Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, and America Ferrera. When it comes to playing MJ, you can easily see why he was picked to portray the King of Pop, thanks to his active Instagram and TikTok pages where he’s shown off his stellar dancing skills.
Juliano Valdi sits down with 1883 to chat about filming Michael, voice acting, the last thing that made him laugh, and more.

What’s one exciting thing that happened to you this week?
One exciting thing that happened this week was coming to New York. I’m really excited to explore the city, see Times Square, and experience everything here. I’ve heard so much about it, so it’s really cool to finally be here.
What was the last thing you read?
The last thing I read was The BFG. It’s a really fun story, and I liked reading about the giant and the adventure.
Favourite memory growing up?
One of my favourite memories growing up is spending time with my family and having fun together. Whether we’re watching movies, joking around, or dancing in the living room, those are the moments I always remember.
Where was the last place you travelled to?
New York City. It’s amazing seeing the city and all the lights in Times Square.
What was the last thing that made you laugh?
Probably when my mom tries to copy my dance moves. She really tries to do them exactly like me, and it makes me laugh every time.
What’s your nighttime ritual?
Before bed, I usually put on my favorite pajamas. Sometimes I watch a video or read on my iPad before going to sleep.
Who would be on your dream dinner party guest list?
Michael Jackson, Stephen Curry, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Roman Reigns, and Jey Uso. I’d also invite some fictional characters like Spider-Man and Superman.
Favourite quote from a film or TV show?
“I wumbo, you wumbo, he, she, me… wumbo!” from SpongeBob SquarePants. That scene always makes me laugh.
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
Billie Jean, the violin version.
Favourite item in your closet?
My sparkly socks. They were a wrap gift from the wardrobe team when we finished filming, and they’re very Michael Jackson style, so they’re really special to me.
Tell us about what it was like to audition to play the young version of Michael and how it felt when you found out you got the role?
The audition process was really long and I had to audition several times. When I finally found out I got the role, I felt really excited and grateful. It was such an amazing opportunity and I couldn’t wait to start working on it.
What were your favourite moments from shooting the film?
Performing the songs was definitely my favorite part. I loved getting to dance and perform the Jackson 5 music because it was so much fun and full of energy.
Do you prefer voice-acting work like in Arco, or live action roles where it’s more physical?
I’d say both. They’re both really fun and exciting to do.

With Michael releasing tomorrow, how will you celebrate?
I’ll probably listen to Michael Jackson all day, dance a lot, and celebrate with my family. It would be really cool to have a watch party together.
Tell us about how you prepared to become the Jackson Five version of Michael Jackson. It’s a huge role!
I watched a lot of Michael Jackson videos and interviews to study how he talked and moved. I rehearsed for months with choreographers Rich and Tone and spent a lot of time watching Jackson 5 performances and practicing the dances.
Moving forward, are there any roles you would like to try your hand at next?
I’d love to play Miles Morales one day. I think he’s a really cool character and it would be amazing to bring him to life.
What’s it like balancing being a normal kid and then having this other side of your life working on films as an actor?
It’s actually pretty easy. I feel like both parts balance out well, kind of like being Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
Finally, what is one thing you would like to manifest for yourself and why?
I’d love the opportunity to work with some of my favorite actors and be part of another exciting project like this one. Some actors I really admire are Michael B. Jordan, Denzel Washington, Tom Holland, Chris Tucker, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson because they bring so much energy and personality to their roles.
