1883 On Rotation: Night Tapes, Sinkane, Ayra Starr

The latest in new music from Night Tapes, Sinkane, The Greeting Committee, Arya Starr & more in this week’s 1883 On Rotation playlist.

On rotation this week is the new single from Night Tapes, a rising genre-bending three-piece based in London. The track is entitled “loner” and it’s a brilliant mix of lush production, delicate vocals, and dream-pop influences. It’s taken from their next EP which releases in April. Moving forward, the group are set to unveil more live dates for this year, so keep an eye on them. Next up is the Norwegian producer Mörmaid. The producer and vocalist has released her first track of 2024 with the intoxicating electronic-focused tune, “I’m Trying”, via Beat Palace Records. Mörmaid was inspired by cult-icon artist Elliot Smith but also took musical cues from Marie Davidson and Kelly Lee Owens for this exhilarating club-ready track. Brooklyn-based Sudanese-American artist, Sinkane, has released an effortlessly feel-good track with “How Sweet Is Your Love”. It’s a vibrant, celebratory, funk-infused single with pristine vocals and production. His new record We Belong is set to release on April 5 and will feature many introspective stories of the black diaspora with themes of love and hope for the future. American indie-rock band The Greeting Committee has shared the new track “popmoneyhits”. It’s an earworm of an indie-pop dance track. Thematically, the song explores the fears of both failure and success in the music industry. Go check it out.

Elsewhere in the playlist, you can find the GRAMMY-nominated artist Ayra Starr. Ayra has just dropped the new tune, “Commas”. It’s a gorgeous single with atmospheric, swelling strings, passionate vocals, and afro-beat drums. The hugely successful Nigerian artist could win her first Grammy award this year at the age of 21-years-old as she’s up for the best African music performance category for her previous hit, “Rush”. Canadian rapper Shareef has released his debut track, “OMG! (Freestyle)”. It’s full of slick flows and trap-styled production. UK music innovators Everything Everything are back with the track, “The End of the Contender”. It’s an addictive art-pop track full of synth and that signature falsetto vocal style we’ve come to love over the years. The band will release their new record Mountainhead on March 1. Finally, singer-songwriter Sam Tompkins is back. His latest musical offering is called “phones in heaven” and it’s a grooving, emotive, pop anthem. Sam’s debut album Hi, My Name is Insecure, is out May 24.
