Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Neev is back with the lush single, Seawall.
With a penchant for writing delicate folk-esque tunes that revolve around the themes of relationships, angst, and life crises, rising artist Neev is back with new single, Seawall. It’s an utterly gorgeous song with beautiful strings, acoustic guitar and serene vocals. Seawall also marks the singer’s first release since her 2021 Currants EP which received support from the likes of BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, and more. So it’s no wonder that the artist has been gaining traction, Neev’s talent for unearthing beauty in the finer details in life makes her a stand-out artist. When speaking about her latest release which was entirely self-produced and mixed by Neev, the musician explains that the track is inspired by Andrew Scott. “I wrote Seawall a few years back, as lockdown hit. I’d watched the play Seawall during lockdown which written for and performed by Andrew Scott, I’d seen it in the theatre too, and it’s a play that shares a monologue where the central character offhandedly refers to a hole in the middle of their stomach,” explains Neev. “This kind of fed into my songwriting, focusing on the themes surrounding fatigue and stretching yourself too thin which became represented by a hole in the stomach. Hence the lyrics: ‘I know that there’s a hole, take no notice’. And: ‘What a way to exist, you’ve been polite ignoring this hole’.”
Alongside the release of the calming tune, the Scottish singer has dropped the visuals for Seawall which 1883 is exclusively premiering today. The music video was directed by Cinematographer Felix Ursell and it follows a dancer as they make a journey to the beach whilst it cuts to Neev performing the song throughout the video. Speaking about the video Ursell says: “A lot of my inspiration comes from art where it feels like entire worlds have been created. This was a key part of the story-boarding, and our approach to visually bringing to life the themes in the song. Dance and movement can be a beautiful way of exploring a narrative in a less linear way, leaving questions unanswered, for the viewer and often, ourselves.”
