Nestled on the cliffs of North Devon’s rugged Atlantic coast, Watersmeet Hotel & Restaurant is the ultimate coastal retreat. Recently awarded Best Waterside Hotel for UK and Ireland 2024 by Condé Nast Johansen, this Edwardian gem combines timeless charm with modern comfort, making it a must-visit destination for anyone craving a memorable seaside escape.
The drive to Watersmeet was an adventure in its own right. Along the coastal road, we were greeted by expansive sea vistas that gradually intensified as we journeyed onward. The winding path, framed by rugged cliffs and the glistening Atlantic, offered a glimpse of the captivating scenery awaiting us at the hotel.
We stayed in one of their Deluxe Sea View Balcony Rooms, located on the first floor of the hotel. These spacious rooms offer a sea view balcony equipped with sun loungers and seating, perfect for alfresco morning coffee or late-night drinks. The room’s king-sized bed, en-suite with shower over bath, and seating area provided a blend of luxury and comfort. Additional amenities like coffee/tea making facilities, a Nespresso machine, and a safe made our stay even more convenient and enjoyable. Whilst waking up to the sight of the rolling surf and distant landmarks like Hartland Point, Baggy Point, and Lundy Island set the perfect tone for our days.
If you love the beach and surfing, Watersmeet is a paradise. The hotel’s private steps lead directly to Combesgate Beach, a sandy cove perfect for bodyboarding and rock-pooling. Even in peak season, the beach remains peaceful and uncrowded, offering a perfect spot for relaxation and exploration. Nearby Woolacombe, famous for its surfing, was a highlight of our trip. We spent hours riding the waves and soaking up the vibrant surf culture. Local surf schools are available for beginners, so everyone can get in on the action.
The surrounding natural beauty is spectacular. Watersmeet is near several National Trust coastal trails, including Morte Point and Baggy Point. These trails offer breathtaking views of the dramatic coastline and lush countryside, ideal for hikers of all levels. Each walk presented us with new perspectives of the rugged landscape, from dramatic cliffs to serene valleys. For adventure seekers, activities like kayaking, coasteering, and horse riding are easily accessible, while golf enthusiasts can enjoy world-class links courses nearby. The blend of outdoor activities ensures that there’s never a dull moment, whether you prefer the thrill of water sports or the tranquility of a coastal hike.
Dining at Watersmeet is an experience in itself. We started our evenings with pre-dinner cocktails on the deck, overlooking the bay (also a fantastic spot for a cheeky afternoon G&T in the sunshine) before heading over to the dining room. As vegetarians, we were delighted with the array of options available, including a delicious cheese soufflé and a mouthwatering mushroom risotto. The two-AA rosette Rocks Restaurant serves dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, showcasing the best of Devon’s land and sea. The wine list was impressive, featuring a range of selections to complement any meal. Breakfast was another treat, with offerings like avocado on toast with poached eggs setting us up perfectly for the day.
When it’s time to take a break from the beach, Watersmeet provides ample opportunities for relaxation. The hotel’s heated outdoor pool, indoor pool with a hot spa, and steam room offer a serene retreat. After days filled with exploration, we found solace in these facilities, unwinding and recharging our spirits. For those seeking an extra dose of pampering, spa treatments are also on offer, providing a luxurious way to fully relax and rejuvenate.
Watersmeet Hotel & Restaurant offers a wonderful blend of natural beauty, luxurious accommodations, and a variety of activities. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast eager to hike the coastal trails or someone who just wants to relax by the sea, Watersmeet has something for everyone.
