Films that did not pass critical review

This selection includes films that, for various reasons, became some of the most notable disappointments of 2025 cinema.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds (2025) is a modern adaptation of H. G. Wells’ classic science fiction novel about an alien invasion.

The plot centres on a cybersecurity analyst who tries to understand what is happening when mysterious creatures begin attacking Earth. Instead of traditional wide-angle action, the events are largely shown through computer screens, video calls and digital interfaces (this format is called screenlife). The characters watch the disaster unfold on their device screens and try to cope with it.

Why I didn’t like it

The film received extremely low ratings: the script was criticised for its nonsensical plot twists, weak dialogue and illogical character decisions. Instead of a tense survival story, the film often feels like a collection of disjointed scenes.

The screenlife presentation is immediately tiresome and makes the plot seem detached, because it rarely creates a real sense of threat or drama, and the main character, played by Ice Cube, mostly sits in front of a monitor rather than participating in dynamic scenes. The film also clearly features elements promoting Amazon products and services (such as drones and delivery services), which makes it feel more like a long commercial than a standalone work.

Snow White

Snow White, a 2025 film, is a new live-action version of the classic Disney fairy tale about a princess whose beauty is envied by her evil stepmother, the queen. When the magic mirror tells her that Snow White has become the fairest of them all, the queen orders her stepdaughter to be eliminated. Snow White flees to the forest, where she finds refuge with seven dwarfs and tries to survive until the villain retreats. This adaptation adds new plot elements, characters and musical numbers, and Snow White herself appears as a more independent and modern heroine.

Why I didn’t like it

Many viewers feel that the film loses the magic of the original: the changes to the story and characters don’t work emotionally, and the dialogue seems unnatural. Instead of live actors, CGI was used for the dwarfs, which creates an artificial feel and hinders the viewer’s empathy.

Some fans of the original were also disappointed by the absence of iconic songs or changes to key elements of the story that made the 1937 cartoon such a beloved classic. Before the film’s release, there was also controversy surrounding the casting, the social commentary of the lead actress (Rachel Zegler), and changes to the plot, all of which created additional animosity among part of the audience.

As a result, Snow White 2025 became one of Disney’s most controversial and ambiguous adaptations: despite its high budget and famous names, it failed to meet the expectations of many viewers — both critics and the public complained about the loss of the original’s charm, weak visual and emotional components, and changes that weakened rather than strengthened the classic fairy tale.

Spy Wedding

Spy Wedding, a 2025 film, is a comedy action film based on the clash of two worlds: a glamorous wedding celebration and dangerous spy work.

Betsy, a wealthy heiress, is preparing for a lavish wedding at her family mansion. Her school friends gather for the occasion, and the atmosphere is one of fun, gossip and pre-wedding excitement. The only one who stands out from the crowd is the bride’s friend Sam. She is constantly disappearing, avoiding rehearsals and behaving strangely, which irritates the other girls. In reality, Sam is not an eccentric designer of pedestals for cat shows, but one of the best special agents, accustomed to high-risk missions. Even her friend’s wedding is not a reason for her to take a day off.

When armed mercenaries storm the mansion in the midst of the celebration and the party is threatened, Sam is forced to reveal her skills — now her main mission is not a secret operation, but to save the bride, the guests and the wedding itself. Ahead lie fights, shootouts, comical situations and attempts to combine spy work with the role of maid of honour.

Why I didn’t like it

Many viewers noted that the idea of a ‘spy at a party’ seems too familiar. The film does not offer a fresh perspective and repeats moves from other action comedies. The comedy largely relies on Rebel Wilson’s signature style, but the jokes do not work for everyone. Some of the humour seemed crude or drawn out.

‘Slaughter Saturday’

‘Slaughter Saturday,’ 2025, is a comedy action film built on the principle of ‘an ordinary day that went disastrously wrong.’

At the centre of the story is Brian, a stay-at-home dad completely immersed in caring for his family and child. His life is far from risk and adventure, so an invitation to spend time with the children of another stay-at-home dad seems harmless and even a little boring. Brian expects to simply endure a few hours of awkward conversation and children’s noise. However, from the very beginning, everything goes wrong. The innocent meeting quickly becomes overgrown with strange details and then suddenly turns into a real nightmare. Gangsters appear, ordinary domestic misunderstandings escalate into fights, followed by shootouts and explosions. Brian, who has no experience with violence, finds himself caught up in a chain of events where every attempt to save the situation only exacerbates the chaos.

Killing Saturday turns an ordinary children’s holiday into an absurd action film, showing how in a matter of hours a peaceful life can fall apart into complete chaos, and a Saturday that promised to be quiet becomes the most dangerous day in the protagonist’s life.

Why I didn’t like it

Despite its dynamic format and familiar genre formula, the film received a lukewarm reception.

A significant part of the jokes are based on rudeness, shouting and humiliation of the characters. For many viewers, the humour seemed tiresome and monotonous. The film also oscillates between comedy and crime, but does not achieve a full effect in either direction. The danger is not taken seriously, and the humour does not always compensate for this.
