This hidden gem in Oualidia on Morocco’s Atlantic coast provides a wealth of facilities and activities, from private beaches to indulgent spa treatments, making it an ideal destination for a luxurious yet eco-friendly holiday.
After a scenic drive from Marrakech via Safi, my partner and I arrived at La Sultana, where we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff who immediately made us feel at home. The first thing we noticed was the welcoming atmosphere, the delightful scent of neroli, and the pervasive sense of comfort and tranquillity. Our luggage was promptly taken care of, and we were welcomed with traditional Moroccan tea and delicious stuffed dates, setting the tone for a memorable stay.
Accommodation
Our first day began with an extensive tour of the property, revealing its stunning architecture and beautiful decor. La Sultana Oualidia, which dates back to the 11th century, has been meticulously restored, blending traditional Moroccan elements with modern touches to create an ambience that is both elegant and inviting. The hotel offers 12 rooms and suites, each with a private terrace and jacuzzi. We were fortunate to stay in the Tree House Suite, a 40-square-metre haven perfect for those seeking tranquillity. Waking up here felt like a dream, with panoramic views of the lagoon, a tree growing through the room, and ample space to relax, even on stormy days.
Upon arrival, guests staying in this suite are provided with a butler’s phone, ensuring round-the-clock assistance while preserving their privacy.
Food and Facilities
Each morning began with a quick workout in the well-equipped gym, followed by a delicious breakfast in one of two scenic locations, each offering breathtaking ocean views. Depending on the weather, guests can choose between indoor and outdoor seating. Our waitress, Hanane, greeted us every morning with warmth, and we enjoyed chatting with her. We were provided with a newspaper and could select from a variety of teas, juices, and coffees. The a la carte breakfast menu offered a wide range of sweet and savoury dishes, including eggs cooked to order and Moroccan Makouda patties, giving us the energy needed for the day’s activities.
For lunch, we dined at La Table de la Plage, overlooking the lagoon. The menu featured delectable specialties such as salt-crusted sea bass, lobster, oysters, and grilled meats, all served fresh. The view of the lagoon’s blue waters added an extra layer of magic to our meal. The kitchen’s ‘terroir cuisine’ philosophy emphasizes 100% vegetable options, carefully selected meats, and freshly caught fish. The local oysters from the lagoon were the finest we have ever tasted!
In the evenings, we savored Moroccan wine at the Oyster Bar while watching the sunset. We toasted my boyfriend’s birthday and relished our storybook stay. Dinner was the highlight of each day for us, and we spent most of our time indulging in the exquisite cuisine—a true hallmark of a great vacation. Calories, after all, don’t exist on holidays.
The dining area, surrounded by large aquariums, an open glass dome, and beautiful decorations, provided the perfect setting to reflect on our adventures over a delicious meal. During the winter months, a cozy fireplace adds warmth to the ambience. With my partner being a trained chef, our expectations for the food were high, and we were never disappointed. Even as a picky eater, I found the food exceptional, with each dish a delight for the senses. The kitchen offers the finest selection of Moroccan products, including vegetarian options sourced from nearby producers and their own organic vegetable garden. Tip: Don’t miss trying one of their traditional tagines—it’s a true culinary masterpiece!
Activities
The lagoon offers endless opportunities for leisure and relaxation. Whether you prefer lounging by the pool (both indoor and outdoor options are available) with a refreshing cocktail in hand or seeking thrills with activities like horse riding, surfing, boat trips, or massages, there’s something for everyone. Just when you think you’ve experienced it all, the team surprises you with another delightful treat. You can also unwind by taking a peaceful boat ride along the oyster beds, learning about the environment, or enjoying leisurely walks along the coast.
Sustainability
In La Sultana’s enchanting herb garden, the team has taken admirable steps to reduce their carbon footprint by cultivating a variety of organic vegetables. Their commitment to sustainable practices is truly remarkable. The hotel’s dedication to 100% sustainable water use is equally impressive. Grey water from showers and kitchens is purified through UV and filtration in an underground technical network, allowing it to be efficiently reused, ensuring a sense of well-being when taking a dip in the pool. Additionally, the still and sparkling tap water served in refillable glass bottles is sourced from the hotel’s underground water system, reflecting its commitment to sustainability in every aspect.
When I reflect on my time at La Sultana, I immediately wish I could hop on a plane back to Morocco. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire team for their outstanding service and, most importantly, for their kindness, which made our stay unforgettable. They allowed us to escape our worries for a few days, filling every moment with a sense of peace and serenity that is hard to find in our hectic daily lives. While we enjoyed complete privacy, we still had the opportunity to make requests at any time. My partner and I are already planning our next trip, and I can’t wait to once again pass through the gates of La Sultana Oualidia!
This is an experience not to be missed.
