Maria Angelica Caruso Launches MAC × Fayah Athleisure

From the stage to the runway, Maria Caruso’s creativity knows no bounds.

It was at a Pre-Oscars event in Beverly Hills that celebrated dancer, choreographer, and creative visionary Maria Angelica Caruso met Nigerian-born designer Ayo Abiola. The instant connection between the two women sparked what would soon become MAC × Fayah, a bold new fashion collaboration that merges Caruso’s global artistry with Abiola’s innovative design sensibilities.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of starting a clothing line that embodies elegance, form, and high function for those of us that lead busy lives between the stage, studio, and the office,” says Caruso. “Meeting Ayo made that dream a reality.”

That dream traces back to Caruso’s childhood, when she and her best friend, Justina White, spent hours sketching couture collections under the name, Martina. Even then, her eye for design and detail was unmistakable. She began taking sewing classes and making her own clothes, often inspired by her mother, who designed and crafted her own garments and costumes.

As Caruso’s dance career took flight, so did her costume design skills as she began collaborating with her mother to create one-of-a-kind costumes for her stage works. To this day, at 45, Caruso still designs many of the costumes seen in her company’s repertoire.

Over time, Caruso’s personal aesthetic evolved toward athleisure wear, but not the ordinary kind. As a globe-trotting performer, producer, and entrepreneur, she needed clothing that combined elegance and ease with pieces that could take her seamlessly from rehearsal studios to meetings to red carpets.

“Form and function are everything to me,” she explains. “I wanted pieces that moved with me, that made me feel strong, feminine, and sophisticated.”

Abiola immediately understood that vision. With her background in couture craftsmanship and her talent for translating artistic ideas into wearable form, she began developing a line that fused Caruso’s signature sense of grace with Fayah’s edgy, modern silhouettes. The result was unveiled on September 26th at Milan Fashion Week, where Caruso performed alongside two principal dancers from ARB Dance Company, a company with whom she has long been a creative collaborator, and 28 models who brought the full collection to life on the runway. The debut show was a triumph of movement and design with a seamless blend of high fashion and performance art.

Closing the MAC × Fayah debut at Milan Fashion Week, Caruso appeared in a couture masterpiece that perfectly captured the spirit of transformation. Designed by Abiola, the Metamorphosis Dress fused sculpture, motion, and light into a breathtaking embodiment of change and growth.

The strapless corseted bodice contoured the torso with architectural precision, emphasizing strength beneath softness. From it, a cascade of hand-cut butterfly appliqués, each meticulously edged and sequined, formed the layered skirt. The wings overlapped in iridescent tones of gilded amber, ivory, and onyx, creating a kinetic shimmer that changed with every gesture. Under stage light, the metallic sequins ignited, echoing the fluidity of a dancer’s movement and the glow of transformation itself.

Each butterfly was uniquely placed, giving the illusion that they are lifting off the fabric mid-flight. The design evoked both delicacy and resilience, an homage not only to Caruso’s celebrated solo work Metamorphosis but also to her role as the Butterfly of Hope in her 2015 ballet Whispers of Light, created for grieving children. The dress thus became a living metaphor for renewal: a reminder that beauty and strength can rise from even the darkest moments.

Caruso styled the look with ethereal organza blossoms woven through her hair and dramatic crystal-and-cherry-red statement earrings, balancing natural grace with modern glamour.
The result was an unforgettable convergence of couture and choreography, a moving sculpture of hope and light.

That butterfly motif has since been adapted into the athleisure collection, where the print flows across high-performance leggings, sculpted crops, and streamlined biker short giving everyday studio wear the same artistic core as the couture piece. It remains one of Caruso’s top picks and a symbol of the brand’s ethos.

Each collection in MAC × Fayah draws inspiration from one of Caruso’s more than 150 choreographic works, connecting the world of dance and fashion in a truly original way.

While Caruso’s dedication to education, outreach, art, and philanthropy remains at the heart of everything she does, MAC × Fayah represents a new dimension of her lifelong mission to build a sustainable and inclusive creative legacy. The line is proudly produced with eco-friendly fabrics, reflecting Caruso’s deep commitment to environmental consciousness and ethical craftsmanship.

The collection officially launched online on October 12th, Caruso’s birthday, marking both a personal and professional milestone.

“Adding a fashion line to my portfolio has been a dream fulfilled,” she reflects. “Through MAC × Fayah, I can share my aesthetic, my story, and my love for design with audiences all over the world.”

With her performances and teaching tours already spanning continents, MAC × Fayah is poised to follow her lead, gracefully, sustainably, and always in motion.
