Wedding cakes are more than just a dessert; they are a centerpiece of the celebration, a visual representation of the couple’s unique style, and a delicious memory-maker. As we look ahead to 2025, the world of wedding cakes is ever-evolving, reflecting current culinary trends, technological advancements, and a renewed focus on personalization.

Sophie Frost is a wedding expert, as an experienced event producer. With her creative vision for wedding styling, decor, food and drink she currently works as the Wedding Events Manager at Babington House in Somerset, which is one of the Soho House private members clubs. Sophie delves into the top wedding cake trends anticipated to dominate 2025, exploring various styles, design elements, and the crucial considerations for couples planning their big day.

When it comes to wedding cakes, the biggest trend Frost sees for 2025 is an artsy touch brough to to the icing. “Wedding cakes are becoming more artistic and personalized, now, more than ever,” she said. “Minimalist designs with sleek, monochromatic tones and textured buttercream are gaining popularity, as are bold statement cakes adorned with hand-painted details or pressed edible flowers.”

Another growing trend, she says, is the use of irregular, sculptural shapes that turn the cake into a true centerpiece. “Couples are also opting for multiple smaller cakes or individual dessert towers instead of a single large one, allowing for diverse flavors and designs that cater to a broader range of tastes,” notes Frost.

When it comes to flavors, she says that taste trends will be more sophisticated. They may also be unexpected with their flavor pairings. “Classics like vanilla bean and chocolate ganache are still beloved, but couples are also embracing unique combinations like Earl Grey and lavender, passionfruit with white chocolate, or pistachio and rose,” said Frost.

Sheet cakes are also making a comeback. “Couples love them for their practicality and cost-effectiveness, especially for larger weddings,” she said. “They can be easily styled with beautiful frosting techniques or edible flowers to match the main cake, ensuring elegance without compromising on convenience.”

You can’t have a wedding cake without cocktails. In 2025, Frost says that signature cocktails will become popular. “Pairing wedding cake with a signature cocktail is a fantastic way to elevate the guest experience and I always recommend that couples use this as an excuse for a further tasting at the venue,” she said.

“The key is to match complementary flavors, like pairing a citrusy lemon cake with a sparkling elderflower spritz or a rich chocolate cake with an espresso martini,” adds Frost. “The cocktail can even incorporate an ingredient from the cake, such as a raspberry garnish to echo a berry filling. This pairing becomes more than just a dessert moment—it’s an interactive and memorable feature of the reception that adds a personal touch and delights guests.”
