1883 On Rotation: Obongjayar, Polly Money

The latest in new music. Curated by the 1883 team.

The latest in new music from Obongjayar, Polly Money, Mae Muller, Tonia & more in this week’s 1883 On Rotation playlist.

On rotation this week, Nigerian artist Obongjayar has shared his gloriously grooving single, “Not in Surrender”. The London-based songwriter may be known for collaborating with the likes of Little Simz, but he’s a rising star in his own right. The song is about “working hard and playing hard seeing how far you can stretch the limits.”

Innovative American singer, rapper, and songwriter Ashnikko is back with the anthemic new track, “Itty Bitty”. It’s a ferocious club-ready track with pristine vocals and explicit lyricism. Ashnikko has recently supported Billie Eilish in Australia, and we can’t wait to see what else is next for the in-demand artist.

Previous 1883 interviewee Yungblud has released the enthralling comeback single, “Hello Heaven, Hello”. It’s full of nuance and explosive rock moments, snarling vocals, and bucks trends by being a nine-minute and six-second experience.

Fast-rising indie-pop and R&B artist Polly Money has shared her anticipated third EP T-Shirt Nothing Else via Coolonline. It’s a gorgeous five-track EP, and Money recently sat down with 1883 to speak about the project and how EP tune “30 Minutes” is the most resonating song on the project for her.

Mae Muller is finally back after a 15-month hiatus with the intoxicating dance-pop gem, “Breakaway”. Although it has an upbeat and vibrant soundscape, it’s easily one of Muller’s most raw and vulnerable songs yet, where she leaves the past behind and embraces new beginnings.

Brighton-based artist James Marriott has shared the pensive alt-pop and rock-leaning single, “Toothache”. The track boasts catchy guitar hooks, serene vocals and a euphoric closing chorus. It’s lifted from his forthcoming sophomore record Don’t Tell the Dog.

AK Patterson has released her new EP Jailbird and it’s a triumph. The four-track project is poetic, cinematic, and imbued with folk sensibilities. Make sure to listen to the EP track “Juno” which has delicate acoustic guitar, powerful and ethereal vocals, and lush harmonies. Thematically, it explores the moon as an old ideal of romance.

Finally, emerging artist Tonia has shared the magnificent track “Cut the Cloth, Didn’t I”. It’s full of soulful vocals, stellar production, and beautiful harmonies. The rising songwriter has already earned slots at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Liverpool sound City this year. Keep an eye on this artist.
