2DIE4 Shifts Gears for IMAX Run

A new trailer has been released for 2DIE4 to mark its IMAX release. Using real competition footage, the Abdala Brothers shot the movie with the intention of its release in IMAX cinemas, and the result is nothing short of stunning.

The Resurgence of Racing

Racing movies are making a huge resurgence right now. F1, starring Brad Pitt, covered Sonny Hayes, who was one of the most promising drivers in F1 during the 1990s. The movie grossed $630 million across the world and received high ratings from critics as well.

Part of the movie’s success came down to the uptick in popularity for F1 racing, with podcasts like The Race F1 Podcast delivering breaking news, as well as expert insights from journalists. The BBC also have their own podcast for race recaps.

BBC Chequered Flag is one of the biggest outlets for driver interviews. In bingo, we are also seeing more racing-themed content. Speedy Bingo, one of the many UK bingo games, is a version of regular bingo that instead uses 30 balls, which are drawn quickly.

This helps to emulate the speed of racing, with the balls in the graphics featuring car tyres and a race track, showing how deeply embedded racing is in our culture, and how much popularity it has gained in recent years.

The Directors have Avoided Using Fictional Circuits

To give the film more authenticity, the directors have chosen to avoid building tracks and instead asked camera crews to follow Felipe Nasr, alongside his co-drivers. They shot a lot of the footage during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France.

By avoiding the more conventional way of filming, they were able to capture the unfiltered emotions during the race. They also shot the footage using one of three IMAX cameras that exist in the world. The project is set to have a lot of cinematic storytelling, and at the same time, acts as a documentary to give people who might not know a lot about racing the insight they need to relate to what the drivers go through on a daily basis.

2DIE4 is also the very first Brazilian production to be filmed using IMAX, meaning it should deliver impressive sound as well as immersive visuals.

The movie started rolling out in April 2026, and a worldwide release is planned. Even though there have been a few motorsport movies released over the years, 2DIE4 helps to put a big focus on how real speed comes with real consequences, and by using experienced drivers rather than actors, the directors hope that they have created a movie that will go down as being one of the best of its time.

Using Panavision lenses, critics have already said how impressive the movie looks on the big screen. The total runtime for the movie is 61 minutes, making it much shorter than most blockbuster releases, but at the same time, it’s also given the directors the chance to condense a lot of the footage to make high-octane moments that really hit home with fans of the spot.
