2026’s Kraken and Grizzly Night Show Why the Natural World Still Has a Place in Horror

Burke Doeren has years of experience that span cinematography, commercial production, and television. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker co-founded the production company 22 Waves Creative and is an up-and-coming name in television. For his feature debut, he chose to focus on a survival story that revolves around respecting nature and the consequences of not doing so.

Grizzly Night is Now Available to Stream

Doeren’s previous work may include Hyperdrive, Battlebots and Crossword, but his new movie takes a completely different route. Grizzly Night dramatises the Night of the Grizzlies, a story from 1967. Two bear attacks occurred just nine miles apart in Glacier National Park.

A park ranger finds himself trying to guide strangers through the wilderness as the situation unfolds. The cast includes Charles Esten, who played Deacon Claybourne in the hit show Nashville, and Lauren Call. Also starring are Brec Bassinger and Oded Fehr. For Doeren, part of the reason why he chose this theme as his debut is that he’s passionate about wildlife conservation and felt as though the story still holds a very true message. He wanted to respect the tragedy and concentrate on the real, human experiences behind bear attacks.

Bears have been used to portray a sense of danger across numerous wilderness stories. In The Revenant, a brutal bear attack leaves a frontier explorer trying to find ways to survive dropping temperatures.

In TV shows like Alone, participants must find ways to survive while facing threats from wildlife, including bears. Beyond television, Clay Newcomb’s Bear Grease podcast goes into the culture and traditions associated with bears, and Doug Peacock’s memoir Grizzly Years takes a more personal perspective. Bears are also a theme in iGaming.

Online slots UK, like the Grizzly Blitz slot game, show bears, wolves, and hares, solidifying how influential the wilderness is, and how it was a safe theme for Doeren to choose for his directorial debut.

Kraken Is Also Available to Stream

2026’s Kraken is now available to stream through Amazon Video, the Sky Store, and the Apple TV Store. Pål Øie directed the movie, and it stars Sara Khorami, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, and Mikkel Bratt Silset. The plot revolves around a marine biologist who researches a fish farm in the Norwegian fjords. She finds that a number of strange deaths are linked to a sea creature.

In Iceland and Norway, there’s a legend that a giant sea monster, which closely resembles a squid or octopus, lurks beneath the sea. The movie was filmed off the coast of Norway to try to add authenticity. In the film, the monster is awakened as sonic technology is used to treat salmon lice.  The film had a 5.3 million euro budget, meaning it’s a full feature film rather than a low-budget indie release.

The movie has an official soundtrack, which was done by the metal band Vreid, who are considered to be one of Sognefjord’s top music exports.

As horror movies focus more on the natural world, with examples being 2025’s Primate and 2026’s Hungry, which follows a hippopotamus, there’s certainly a trend in the genre right now.
