Track by track: Cam Cole explores creative freedom on Lost In Creation

From the streets of Camden to stages around the world, Cam Cole has built a career on instinct, independence and raw, unfiltered rock ‘n’ roll. Today, he releases Lost In Creation via New Age Records UK, his most ambitious and expansive album to date. Blending desert blues, psychedelia, folk and fuzz, the record pushes beyond his signature one-man-band sound, embracing unexpected instrumentation, guest vocalists and a newfound freedom to experiment.

Recorded at Dean Street Studios in London, Lost In Creation draws on years of touring, travelling and musical discovery. Cam’s guitar, unmistakable vocals and Farmer Footdrums remain at its core, but here they become the foundation for something altogether bigger, with each track following its own creative direction.

From the swirling psychedelia of ‘Rabbit (She’s What I Want)’ to the romantic, haunting energy of ‘Ur So Beautiful’ and the blues-driven urgency of ‘Chasing Dreams’, the album captures an artist unafraid to push beyond familiar territory. Beneath its stylistic shifts lies a central idea: music as an escape from the noise of everyday life, offering a moment to breathe, reset and reconnect.

Having transformed street performances into an international career, Cam continues to do things on his own terms. Across ten tracks, Lost In Creation captures that restless spirit, finding him at his most adventurous and creatively uninhibited.

For 1883 Magazine, Cam Cole pens a track-by-track on the new album, delving into each song on the project.

Fee Fi Fo

This was one of the last songs that was written for the album. I had a feeling that the album could do with a bit more blues as it was starting to lean a bit more towards the psychedelic 60s sound overall. When I get hungry for a certain type of sound, I usually write my best songs.

I had this new Mule Resonator guitar that I hadn’t really written anything on, and I sat down and this very American sounding song popped out. After pre-production it became clear to us that we had the perfect stomping opener for the album that will rock a room.

Rabbit (She’s What I Want)

It’s obviously influenced by Jefferson Airplane and their song White Rabbit. Every now and then I find a new drum beat on my foot drums that I had never played before and that then ends up influencing entire songs, so this one really started wit that beat before everything else. I had this other dreamy psychedelic riff lying around and that fit magically on to the rest and then became the chorus. The lyrics are basically just a stream of consciousness, reading Alice in Wonderland while tripping about.

Chasing Dreams

I was on tour somewhere, I don’t remember now exactly where but I just get bored sitting around in tour busses and vans so I while going from A to B on some motorway I went through my laptop where I save all these riff ideas and remembered I had this one. For a while I didn’t quite know what I want this tune to be about but especially at the time and still now I guess it felt like the entire world from every corner and every political angle and what not was screaming through our phone screens trying to force their way of thinking onto every one else, blaming everyone else and so on.

I think so many of us just feel exhausted and tired of all the moaning and aggression and just want to be good people in their community, in their own way so this is what this song ended up being about. Let’s stop the whining and get some shit done, have some dreams. It’s gonna make us all happier and the world a better place in the end, I think. Everyone is singing about the news, I’m not trying to pretend like I have all the answers or something to preach to you about and that’s okay.

Ur So Beautiful

It’s about a girl that I was infatuated with and it is basically about capturing that moment in time where you just look at someone and feel just intensely drawn to them. When you write songs, the hardest thing to do is getting that feeling that you had in the moment into a song, but every now and then it works out and with this one I feel like I got it down. It’s a love song that I’m happy to put my name on.

Tailgate

It’s blues but with a lot of attitude and a really raw big guitar sound. I had this idea of this massive guitar sound that sounds like an entire orchestra, just completely massive with these big notes in my head. The lyrics then turned into these two characters having a call and response.

I recorded that riff idea on my little battery powered Marshall practice amp that I had lying around in my van, and while I was recording, it had a beanie on top of it dampening the high end. We recorded the song in the studio later and it was missing something so we got the little Marshall amp out and put a beanie on top of it and recorded  that, blended it in and there the vibe was again.

Feeling Me Now

I first started writing this one during the recording sessions for my previous album back in 2022. I was listening to a lot of Northern Soul and music from Manchester, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Oasis that sort of stuff. Instead of vocals I just started scatting on top of it not caring too much about the meaning of it all, just singing nonsense. That one will be a challenge live cause its hard on the legs when you play this fast nonstop tambourine beat plus a four on the floor  with the foot drums for four straight minutes, but I will have to play it because it seems to be everyone’s favourite on the record (laughs).

Get Up Ya Honky Tonk

Oh god, this one is one of the reasons we called the album “Lost In Creation”, it took aaaaages to get right. It was written a few years ago and it was just a simple blues song with the main riff. We recorded it in the studio that way initially, but when I was laying down the vocals I had all these new ideas for it, I rewrote the chorus and then all these noises were added in the bridge.

And then we had like endless amounts of mixes of it, some sounding more like a modern rock mix and that didn’t work so we want back and got the stuff more live and roomy…honestly it took ages but people like it so we seem to have gotten it right in the end. If I had more time I would still tweak and tweak it but I guess, it’s a good thing we forced ourselves to stop. The only thing left from the original session in this one are the drums, everything else got redone and re recorded at some point during that mad journey that track took us on.

You Shall Be Saved

That song was recorded for my previous album at Rockfield Studios four years ago and finished then. But it felt completely out of place on that last album, which was very heavy rock, so we held it back for this . It doesn’t feel like a song my audience would usually think I would write, it’s a guitar pop song that I don’t feel like a twat singing. I like how it turned out, It has some soul to it. I wrote it at the end of the Covid lockdowns where everyone felt so down about everything, and all these small independent businesses got fucked over and bought up and everyone was losing their jobs.  I just wanted to write a tune that gave some hope to us, saying we can stick this one out together.

Shroom Swamps

I was on tour in the US around New Orleans in the swamps on some boat. Some guy gave me some magic mushrooms and I was surrounded by all these alligators and cypress trees coming out of the water, it did my head in. I got back to the van and it was super-hot in there and I just got my guitar out to jam and it started sounding like this Spanish guitar mixed with blues and the slide. It’s a live jam more than a song I guess but I love how it turned out. Mad day that one, let me tell ya.

Lost In Creation

This song basically sums up the entire album and the process of making, that’s why it ended up being the album title.  It’s about the joy of just writing songs, playing music, getting lost in it. I could happily do that for all eternity; I was just trying to explain how much I love it all. All the music on my last two albums is basically just the byproduct of these sessions and days and weeks where I just lock myself away in my room and make music.

Songwriting to me is the most spiritual thing you can do, I can’t exactly put my finger on what it is, but it feels like something else is writing these songs for you and as a musician you just feel guided by it. And the process of making this album felt the same, we just took the time and freedom to paint with sound, follow ideas and see what comes out at the other end. I loved making this record even though it drove us crazy sometimes and I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had making it.
