A Wellness Holiday in Cyprus: Larnaca Bay or the Protaras Coast?

A wellness holiday in Cyprus does not have to mean a week indoors. On the island’s south east coast, the sea is calm and shallow for much of the year and the walking is easy. The cooler months bring clear light and quiet beaches. The spa becomes one part of the day rather than the whole of it, with a swim, a walk and a long lunch fitted around it.

Two stretches of coast suit this kind of trip particularly well. Larnaca Bay, close to the airport, has a long sandy shore, wetlands full of birds and a working town nearby. Protaras, further east, has cliff paths, small coves and a more rugged headland at Cape Greco. They are less than an hour apart by road, so a week can easily take in both.

What to look for on a wellness holiday in Cyprus

The facilities that matter most change with the season. In summer an outdoor pool and a shaded garden carry the day. From autumn to spring, a heated indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room get used every day, and a gym helps keep a routine going between walks. It is also worth checking which treatments the spa offers, such as facials and body treatments. Ask, too, whether the indoor pool is open to all guests or only to those booking treatments.

Seasonality is the other question. Some resorts on the east coast open only from spring to autumn, so dates for a winter trip need checking before anything else.

Larnaca Bay: sea walks, birds and a long beach

The hotels east of Larnaca sit along the Dhekelia road, about ten kilometres from the town centre, on one of the longest stretches of sand in the area. Just inland, Oroklini Lake is a protected wetland where around 190 bird species have been recorded, with a bird hide that makes an easy first stop of the morning. On the other side of town, the Larnaca Salt Lake has a flat 4 kilometre nature path, and from November to around March thousands of flamingos spend the winter there.

On this stretch, the Golden Bay Beach Hotel runs its spa, Golden Bay Spa by Cavo D’Oro, alongside an indoor pool with an integrated jacuzzi that is heated through the winter months, and a sauna. There is also a gym and two outdoor tennis courts, where lessons are available. For something more active, the Dhekelia Services Sailing Club nearby runs dinghy sailing courses over four days.

A typical day here starts with a walk or an hour at the bird hide. Lunch can be at one of the fish taverns along the Piale Pasha seafront in town, and the day ends back at the spa as the light fades.

Protaras: cliff paths and quiet coves

Protaras feels different. The coast is broken into small bays, and the headland at Cape Greco is a national forest park crossed by short marked trails. The Aphrodite trail is a 2 kilometre circuit from the visitor centre, and the longest route in the park runs 8.5 kilometres from the chapel of Profitis Elias, above Protaras, down to Konnos Bay. Konnos itself is a small sheltered cove of about 200 metres, a good place to finish a walk with a swim.

In Protaras, the Golden Coast Beach Hotel has its spa, Aegeospas, on the ground floor. It offers body and face treatments, and manicures and pedicures, with a heated indoor pool and jacuzzi, a sauna and a steam room. In April and in the second half of October the indoor pool is open to all guests, and in the other months it is kept for those using the spa. The hotel also has a gym and padel and tennis courts.

Here the rhythm is more outdoor. A trail fills the cooler morning, followed by a swim at Konnos or on Louma beach in front of the hotel, and the heat rooms come in the afternoon.

Planning a wellness holiday in Cyprus across both coasts

The two coasts suit slightly different trips. Larnaca Bay works best in the cooler months, with the flamingos on the Salt Lake, flat walks and a town on the doorstep for evenings out. Protaras is at its best in spring and autumn, when the cliff paths are comfortable and the water is still warm enough for a swim.

A week can also be split between them. Four nights on Larnaca Bay and three in Protaras gives a mix of town and wetland walks followed by coastal trails, with less than an hour’s drive in between.

However it is arranged, a wellness holiday in Cyprus on this coast works best when it stays unhurried. A morning outdoors, an afternoon in the spa and an early night is a simple formula, and both coasts make it easy to follow.
