There comes a point in every beauty cycle when a haircut transcends mere trend status and becomes a cultural reset. This summer, that reset is the “bixie”. Not quite a bob, yet longer than a pixie, this hybrid cut is currently dominating red carpets, runways, and the collective consciousness of the fashion set. It is the ultimate antidote to high-maintenance styling – a cut that feels undone, slightly rebellious, and entirely effortless.
The early 2020s were all about the precision bob. Remember everyone flicking their bobs ends outwards for a second, too? Anyways, the bixie is its cooler, more relaxed younger sister. It is a haircut that does not ask for perfection; rather, it thrives on natural texture and movement.
The bixie is not entirely new. Its roots are firmly planted in the 1990s, an era defined by a departure from the oversized, lacquered hair of the ’80s. Supermodels like Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington, alongside Hollywood icons such as Winona Ryder, Meg Ryan, and Drew Barrymore, championed the choppy, cropped aesthetic. Later, in the early 2000s, Halle Berry cemented the style’s icon status with her signature textured crop.
What makes the 2026 iteration feel fresh is its approach to softness. The modern bixie features feathered, choppy layers with a shorter nape and sides, while the top is left longer to fall softly around the face. It is a shape that hovers delicately between structure and fluidity.
Talking about the bixie, the co-founder and creative director of Salon 64, Ricky Walters said: “I love the bixie cut. After years of seeing mullets dominate, it feels like the girls have taken things up a notch with the bixie. It’s the perfect summer haircut – effortless, full of personality, and ideal for anyone with natural movement in their hair. It has that relaxed, lived-in feel with just the right amount of attitude.”
The current revival has been heavily fuelled by a new generation of it-girls. When Zendaya made a surprise appearance at the Academy Awards earlier this year, she debuted a voluminous bixie that immediately sent the internet into a frenzy. Her version, styled by Ursula Stephen, was refined, proving that the cut can easily transition into evening glamour. And, Zendaya has been showing crowds just how versatile a bixie cut can be throughout her recent press tours for The Drama and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Similarly, singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams has made the bixie her signature look. At the Chanel Spring 2026 Couture show, Abrams showcased a romantic, side-parted variation that felt modern. In fact, since getting the cut, Abrams’ Instagram has become an inspiration moodboard for the cut. Walters says what these two showbusiness icons have in common is that they “wear the style in a way that feels modern and wearable, showing how the cut can be adapted to suit different hair types and personal styles.”, adding: “Clients are looking for short hair without it feeling too short. They want softness, texture and versatility, and the bixie delivers all of that.”
The brilliance of the bixie lies in the fact that it can be shaped to flatter every face. By keeping volume at the crown and incorporating face-framing layers, the cut can be tailored to suit you. It is also incredibly versatile across hair textures. For thick hair, the choppy layers remove excess weight, making the hair lighter and more manageable. For fine hair, the feathered ends create the illusion of fullness and dimension. And, it’s a wash-and-wear style at its core, so there is no need to spend hours trying to style it. Unlike many laidback-seeming haircuts that take intense amounts of maintenance, Bixie keeps its promise of ease.
I asked Ricky Walters how he would recommend to style it. For naturally curly or wavy hair, he recommended using a curl cream, highlighting: “Less is definitely more – work a small amount through damp hair, scrunch it in and let your natural texture do the work” And, for those who want a polished finish, Walters said: “Diffuse the hair on a low speed with a warm heat setting. Taking your time with the diffuser helps the hair set into shape while maintaining movement and softness.”
If you’ve been looking for a summer haircut, the bixie cut might be what you’ve been searching for. Plus, it matches the societal shift towards appreciating authenticity, low-maintenance, and quiet confidence. And, as the temperature has made it routine to climb beyond 30C, this might be the stylish saving grace you need to survive the heat.
