Independent films don’t often experience the same success as major productions, but the reason why isn’t a quality issue. It’s a marketing issue. Major film studios often create huge campaigns for social media, create ads for YouTube, and put posters up in train stations, often months before a movie comes out. Indie movies don’t have that luxury, and the reality is that even if an indie movie experienced amazing reviews, it could disappear after a week because most people didn’t know it even came out.

Are Free Ticket Giveaways the Solution?
An interesting movement we are seeing right now is actually happening in the UK. The British Film Institute launched a new initiative two years ago called Escapes. This utilised £2.7 million in funding and gave tickets away to indie movies. It was so popular that it’s not just been given an extra £3 million in investment, it’s also been extended to operate until 2029. Try-before-you-buy entertainment has always worked, so it makes perfect sense to embrace this.
Festivals routinely run giveaways through social media or even through radio stations, and podcasts often give free tickets to live shows in an attempt to build a bigger community. Even online bingo promotions feature big prize giveaways, which run alongside welcome offers. By embracing this model, those who have never played bingo have an entry point, and at the same time, it doesn’t devalue what the platform offers. As independent movies are also facing pressure from streaming platforms, this is an important trend to consider.
The success of major studio films, like Project Hail Mary, which grossed well over $656 million across the world, and is one of the highest-grossing, non-franchise movies to date, benefited largely from its visibility. The widespread media attention helped to put it on everyone’s radar. Audiences in this day and age are not rejecting the idea of indie movies because they are lower budget. A lot of the time, it’s because they simply don’t know they exist, but free ticket giveaways are not only a way to gain huge visibility, they are also a way to do so on a minimal budget, with no extensive marketing required.
The Independent Movie Market is Ready for Change
The UK’s initiative shows that 220,000 tickets were claimed for free independent movie giveaways. This is a 72% uptake, with movies like Kneecap, Lollipop, and Giant being popular. Interestingly, 58% of people who claimed a free ticket went on to pay for a screening outside of the Escapes program. 72% of people also did not know about the film before they claimed a ticket. Examples like this show that independent cinema has a marketing issue, and that if this can be solved, we could see the biggest indie cinema boom to date.
Indie movies are also undergoing a resurgence right now, with a lot of this being driven by breakout hits and the democratization of filmmaking tools. As audiences are also craving more genuine, honest, and real stories, now is the time for an indie cinema revolution.
