Bridging his background in classical music with roots in folk traditions, New York–based singer-songwriter Joshua Jensen crafts a sound that moves between pop, Appalachian folk, blues, and old-world ballads. Originally from Arizona, Jensen approaches music as an endless deep dive, a process of “swimming down further into that pond,” as he puts it. That sonic journey took him from writing songs and teaching himself the basics of music production in an isolated northern Arizona cabin during the pandemic to studying jazz in New York, tracing the connections between the sounds that have shaped his musical perspective.
With “People Were Singing,” Jensen presents one of his most emotionally charged works to date. The track opens as a quiet acoustic ballad before expanding into a dynamic arrangement. Subdued vocal delivery carries the initial narrative weight while sudden bursts of electric guitar and sweeping violin accents elevate the underlying rhythm, a deliberate shift for a song Jensen frames as his ultimate regret.
What began as a simple campfire tune quickly evolved, forcing him to surrender to the story being told, like a dizzying dream. By letting the music dictate the moment, Jensen confronts the sting of lingering memories and the painful admission of losing the best waltz partner in the room.
Jensen also brings “People Were Singing” to the screen with a minimalist, dreamlike music video that translates the song’s internal themes visually. Jensen performs alone in a stark room, giving the impression of an isolated reality while scenes of fireworks are intertwined throughout the clip. Strategic color grading coats the visuals in distinct, shifting shades, heightening the song’s emotional depth.
The release arrives during a busy stretch of live performances for Jensen. He recently performed alongside Suki Waterhouse on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, with an appearance at the ACL still ahead in October. In New York, he marked the occasion with the “People Were Singing” release show, an intimate evening featuring Jensen and his band performing around a Steinway grand piano in the round.
