Layana Resort: A Place Where Time Stands Still

A diamond in the crown that is Thailand—a place that combines serenity, beauty, and authenticity in a way that few places can.

My New Year’s resolution was to stare into space more; and how’s that going? Not well. In 2025, where full diaries, endless to-do lists, and scrolling through social media are the norm, the desire the switch off is higher (and more needed) than ever. The wellness movement is at an all-time high with meditation apps, online therapy, YouTube workouts and social media hacks attempting to squeeze a moment of self-care into our busy schedules. But what if we could really switch off? I flew halfway across the world to Layana Resort and Spa, a hidden paradise tucked away on the peaceful southern island of Koh Lanta, where the palm trees sway lazily in the breeze and time itself seems to take a gentle pause.

As the taxi turned off the main road, the air grew softer, the sounds quieter, and the sight of towering palm trees welcoming me onto a long, tree-lined path made all the worries of my day vanish. Layana means “a pause in time”, and when I finally arrived, I wasn’t quite ready for the overwhelming sense of peace that lay ahead. The welcome was as warm as the island’s sun with a fresh flower garland placed around my neck, a cool lemongrass-scented face towel, and a refreshing roselle flower elixir, all offered with a smile that immediately made me feel at home. Soon, I was whisked away to an Ocean Deluxe Villa, my sanctuary for the next few days.

The resort has 57 rooms, each thoughtfully designed, a mix of pavilions and villas nestled within the expansive grounds. The space is perfectly designed to blend with nature, with two pools (one saltwater), two bars, a restaurant, gym, and, of course, the tranquil Linger Longer Spa. The sprawling grounds are meticulously kept; lush and vibrant—this is a place to breathe deeply and unwind. They say it’s the little things that count, and Layana has these in abundance. Poolside watermelon slices, chilled water served throughout the day, and an abundance of thoughtful touches in your room—from cotton robes to the finest toiletries, and even a coffee machine, just like home. You’re well taken care of here with simple, effortless luxury making you feel truly at ease.

Affectionately known as the Land of Smiles (and it’s easy to see why), Thailand radiates an air of familiarity and an irresistibly welcoming charm. The warm, friendly energy here is palpable, and it doesn’t take long to feel at home. Layana has a special place in the hearts of many who return year after year, sometimes staying for weeks or even months. It’s more than just a resort—it’s a retreat. General Manager Franck, whose love and passion is clear, rather movingly describes Layana as a “deeply personal and emotional experience for guest”. It’s a place where tranquility reigns, and connections are made with the incredible staff who provide such thoughtful and impeccable service.

Looking out over the resort, there’s beauty in every direction. To the west, the soft curve of the Andaman Sea sparkles under the sun; to the east, turquoise pools are surrounded by towering palms and white parasols. Though no beaches are private in Thailand (they belong to the King, and all are welcome), Layana’s stretch of coastline feels like a secret hideaway, with its white sand and clear, shallow waters—a perfect place to escape into a world of your own. Sitting proudly within the resort grounds, Layana’s captivating guardian statues are more than mere works of art; they stand as a tribute to Koh Lanta’s vibrant Sino-Thai heritage. These statues, powerful yet graceful, embody the island’s unique cultural fusion. For over a century, Chinese migrants have left an indelible mark on Lanta’s identity, blending their traditions with Thai influences. From the bustling trade of Lanta Old Town to the island’s spiritual practices, their legacy continues to shape the community. At Layana, these statues honour this cultural harmony, acting as guardians of both the past and the present, symbolising wisdom, protection, and timeless elegance.

SeaSky Restaurant is the heart of Layana’s dining experience—offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a menu that never feels repetitive, with its extensive and carefully curated selection. The food here is a reflection of the island itself: fresh, vibrant, and nourishing. At breakfast, a colourful spread of tropical fruits, freshly baked goods, and juices keeps you feeling light yet satisfied. Thai dishes like Pad Thai and spicy curries, paired with Western options such as fresh salads and grilled meats, allow you to explore a world of flavour without overindulging. Every meal feels like a treat that’s kind to your body, leaving you full without the heaviness that often comes with resort food.

The sunsets at Layana are something else entirely and angled perfectly towards the west, every evening brings a new painting across the sky; a mix of deep oranges and purples, reflects off the ocean as you sip on fresh fruit cocktails, and the world feels serene. It’s an invitation to linger, to savour the moment, and to truly be present. With the evening air full of life, and live music drifting through the air, the setting feels like something out of a dream—a romantic, peaceful, intimate atmosphere.

The resort’s wellness offerings are woven into every part of the experience at Layana, from the food to the space itself. The Linger Longer Spa is the perfect place to slow down, relax, and reconnect with yourself. The treatments here are designed to transport you into a state of complete relaxation—from Thai massages that ease away tension to body scrubs that leave your skin feeling renewed. For those seeking balance, yoga and meditation classes are offered regularly, in settings that bring you closer to the island’s tranquil energy. The spa embraces the idea of being present in the moment—of lingering longer—so you leave feeling lighter, more grounded.

Whether you’re an experienced yogi or a beginner, the classes cater to all levels. The calming environment and the gentle guidance of the instructors make each session a peaceful journey. And for those who like to stay active in a different way, the resort’s gym has all the equipment you might need, with personal trainers available to help you maintain your routine in paradise.

But perhaps the most rejuvenating part of Layana is simply stepping outside. The island, with its still waters, dense mangroves, and vibrant marine life, offers a chance to reconnect with nature in a way that few other places can. The resort offers a host of activities to immerse you in the natural beauty of Koh Lanta—paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkelling trips to Koh Rok and Koh Haa, and cruises to explore the surrounding islands. Whether it’s gliding over calm waters on a paddleboard, venturing into the peaceful mangrove forests by kayak, or snorkelling amidst coral reefs, every activity is designed to reconnect you with the island’s peaceful rhythm.

Each day felt as though I was living in a dream—a perfect escape from the noise of the world, with just the gentle ebb and flow of the sea, the warm sun, and the soft sounds of nature. Layana Resort and Spa is a diamond in the crown that is Thailand—a place that combines serenity, beauty, and authenticity in a way that few places can. If you’re looking for a getaway that leaves you feeling restored, nourished, and full of peace, this is the place where the world seems to stop, and only the present moment remains. Layana, simply put, is heaven on earth.
