Small towns have a way of turning routine into a rut. That’s the itch Ayr rockers Mixed Signals scratch on their blistering new single “Ghosts,” a track about outrunning the versions of yourself you’ve outgrown.
Born from a late night writing session in Glasgow with Ben Gardiner and Elizabeth Elektra, “Ghosts” doesn’t dress up its message. It’s about the exes, the old habits, and the stale weekends that keep dragging you backward just as you try to move forward. Gardiner puts it simply: even change can loop you right back into the same patterns you’re trying to escape.

“There are countless ways one person can make you feel in a single day,” Gardiner says. “Most people can relate to that swing between heartbreak and hope,” a line that could double as the band’s mission statement.
That emotional whiplash is baked into the group’s DNA. Mixed Signals weren’t even supposed to be a band. Gardiner roped in university mates James Armstrong (guitar) and Leon Calder (bass) for what was meant to be a one off charity gig back in 2024. The chemistry stuck. So did the name, nicked from a Night Café song title. Since then, the trio has stitched together a sound that pulls from Inhaler’s melodic punch, Biffy Clyro’s rawness, and the widescreen atmosphere of Radiohead and Muse, with a bit of Oasis cockiness thrown in for good measure.
The momentum backs up the hype: a sold out debut headline show at Glasgow’s Audio, a King Tut’s headline slot, a 2025 appearance at Isle of Wight Festival, and 300,000+ streams on debut single “Are You Satisfied?” All signs point to a band on the verge of breaking out well beyond Scotland.
“Ghosts” is streaming now.
