Have you ever watched a movie and started to feel hungry for something that you know you’ll never be able to eat in the real world? The best fictional food we see people eating in the movies can add enormously to the atmosphere while making us wonder what it really tastes like.

Fruits, Coloured Milk and Instant Bread – Star Wars
Science fiction movies offer tremendous opportunities for filmmakers to have fun creating weird new types of food and drink. The Star Wars franchise has everything from blue and green milk to fruits that look amazing. Polystarch portion bread is perhaps the most impressive item, as the flour just needs to be mixed with water to instantly create some great-looking bread that’s tastes fantastic. You’ll find recipes for versions of this bread online, but none claim to be as impressive as the real thing.
Other entertainment industries also use food to enhance their visualisation capabilities. For instance, we can see food used in the space-themed Sugar Rush slot game. A rocket at the side of the screen is filled with candy while some of the key symbols include fruit jellies and coloured sweets. Other slots like Sweet Bonanza and Cheeky Fruits 6 Deluxe take the food theme and add their own twist to it. Creative, interesting food is also widely used in sci-fi books and TV series. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy famously introduces items like the unappetising Algolian Zylat Burger and the Vegan Rhino Cutlet.
Pizza in a Cup – The Jerk
This 1979 comedy catapulted Steve Martin to movie superstardom. While some of the jokes might no longer be considered suitable for modern audiences, there’s no doubt that the pizza in a cup he loves is pretty intriguing. We see Martin’s character, Navin R. Johnson, eating delicious Pizza-in-a-Cup in one of the movie’s best moments.
Take a look online and you’ll find some recipes for recreating this dish, apparently inspired by the movie. You’ll even find a mug pizza recipe that just needs to be cooked in a microwave for a minute. Pizzas are also featured in Back to the Future II, where a tiny, dehydrated pizza is instantly turned into a normal-looking pizza when placed in a special hydrator device.

Lembas Bread – The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The fantasy world created by J. R. R. Tolkien is perfect for introducing weird and wonderful food. Lembas or Elven bread is probably the most memorable and what most viewers would love to try at least once. This nutritious product stays fresh for months when wrapped in the right leaves, and this is a crucial reason why Frodo and Sam were able to reach Mordor.
Unfortunately, the secret recipe is known only to elves. That hasn’t stopped many Lembas bread recipes from appearing online. So, you can try a version of this treat, even if it’s not guaranteed to be exactly the same food that we saw being eaten on the screen.
Fictional food is always going to play a big part in movies. Whether it’s a sci-fi, comedy, or fantasy film, the addition of something unusual for the characters to eat helps it stay in our memories for longer.
