1883 On Rotation: The girli Playlist Takeover

The alt-pop talent, girli, takes over this week's 1883 On Rotation playlist.

The alt-pop talent, girli, takes over this week’s 1883 On Rotation playlist.

Never afraid to speak up and champion important topics like the LGBTQIA+ community, and feminism, the London-based artist, girli, has been a positive force in the music industry since first bounding onto the scene in 2015. Over the years, Girli has released a slew of EPs, dropped her debut record Odd One Out in 2019, supported Declan Mckenna, played MTV Presents Gibraltar Calling Festival, Latitude, and embarked on a headline UK tour as well. The forward-thinking artist recently shared her sophomore record, Matriarchy. It’s a bright, honest, and insightful body of work with electro-pop influences.

Speaking about the record, girli said: “Matriarchy is an album of honest, authentic, confident but also painfully self-aware songs. It’s a story of the pain of growing up and healing from experiences that diminish your self-worth to nothingness. It’s about building yourself back up again after pain, setting boundaries and becoming a queen of your own queendom. It’s about the pain and joy of the queer experience, the rollercoaster of adulthood and mental illness, setting boundaries and learning to love yourself and ultimately finding your people, your community, your matriarchy.”

To celebrate the release of the new LP girli has curated a list of some of her favourite tracks for this week’s 1883 Magazine playlist.

“The Worst Person Alive” – G Flip

G Flip is so talented and such a captivating performer! I saw them live in London and it blew my socks off. This song encapsulates the weird mix of indifference and tinge of pain months after a breakup.

Flicker” – Donna Missal

This artist is unreal! This song makes me go feral.

Dinner With Friends” – Kacey Musgraves

I think she’s one of the best songwriters to ever live. Her beautiful lyricism, the nuance in her delivery, this song gives me chills. Her album Golden Hour inspired me a lot when writing my album Matriarchy.

Under The Moon” – 070 Shake

070 Shake might be the coolest person to ever walk the planet, like, intimidatingly cool. I save this song for late night drives.

Sting” – Fletcher

I see a lot of myself in Fletcher – I think we both have a similar approach when it comes to writing lyrics, which is; tell the listener fucking everything. Open books. This song is so painfully true.

Casual” – Chappel Roan

Sad pop perfection.

Heartbreak in the Making” – Dagny

This song makes me wanna laugh and cry at the same time! A celebration of feeling things even if they’re painful, because it means you’re alive!

The Feminine Urge” – The Last Dinner Party

This band are the crossover of ye olde femininity and rock n roll that I’ve been gagging for.

Drew Barrymore” – SZA

SZA’s music feels like a warm hug.

Touching Yourself” – The Japanese House

It’s such a sexy bop.
