Ava Renn has shared her latest single, “Sellout’s Prelude”, offering another look at her upcoming second album, You Want Love.
The track is dreamy and atmospheric on the surface, but there’s something much darker underneath. Built around haunting melodies, soft vocals and hypnotic production, ‘Sellout’s Prelude’ explores addiction, emotional dependence and the difficult point where giving in starts to feel easier than fighting your way back.
Renn has been writing music since she was 11, describing songwriting as something that became a refuge during difficult periods of her life. That personal connection comes through on You Want Love, an album centred around moving through some of life’s darker moments in search of something brighter.
‘Sellout’s Prelude’ came together in Texas in the early hours of the morning after an intense conversation about losing yourself and where that can lead. With Nick Drake among the inspirations for the song, Renn and her producer allowed the track to develop without overthinking it.
“As the sun came up, he started playing the opening chords, and I sang the song from top to bottom in an almost dream-like state,” Renn says. “It felt like I was finally releasing something that had been sitting on my spirit for a long time.”
That sense of immediacy is part of what gives the song its pull. There’s no attempt to dress up what Renn is singing about.
Instead, the music creates a strangely beautiful contrast with the subject matter, with shimmering production disguising lyrics rooted in darker experiences.
Renn calls the track a “dreamy, trance-like battle cry” about addiction “of any kind”, taking listeners into what she describes as the space between indulgence and self-preservation.
The meaning is intentionally broad. Addiction can take many forms, and Renn leaves enough room for the listener to find their own experience in the song, whether that’s a substance, a relationship, ambition or something else entirely.
Following the heavier edge of some of her previous work, “Sellout’s Prelude” also reveals a more atmospheric side to Renn. It’s quieter, but no less emotionally charged.
With You Want Love on the horizon, the single suggests Renn is continuing to push further into the uncomfortable places that have always informed her music — and finding something beautiful there.
