When speaking with Asha Banks, it’s clear music completely colours her inner world. Earlier this year, 1883 caught up with the actress ahead of the release of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and, at the time, Banks was eager to begin releasing music. “I love writing songs and keeping that creativity flowing,” she said. “It’s been so much fun working with so many cool people, and I’m excited to start releasing music. It’s such a big part of my life that sits underneath everything else until it’s time for it to flourish, and I’m excited for that time to come.” A few weeks ago, that dream came true with the release of “So Green,” Asha Banks’ debut single.
Hailing from Hertfordshire, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter’s debut is a masterclass at narrative building that leans into Swiftian songwriting. “‘So Green’ is my first single – it’s about the conflicting feelings when you’re jumping into something new,” explains Banks. Equal parts evocative and expressive, the undercurrent of “So Green” is Banks’ ability to weave the stories delicately pulled from her own journals and deftly turn them into songs.
The visuals for “So Green,” which is premiering today on 1883, mimic the same intimacy and vulnerability depicted in the lyrics in the song. It’s apt that the video sees Banks sitting atop a treehouse performing a stripped-down version of the song. “‘So Green’ is inspired by those raw emotions, so having been able to do a live, stripped-back version feels really fitting for this song,” says Banks. “I had so much fun shooting the live video for ‘So Green.’ I stayed in the beautiful treehouse we shot in and that was cool enough! This live video accompanies the announcement for my first headline gig at the Shoreditch Treehouse on the 12th of December which I can’t wait for!”
