The Dark-Pop Shadows and Carnal Intrigue of D’Arcy’s New Single “XTC”

When D’Arcy drops new music, predicting her direction is half the intrigue. Listeners might encounter the live-wire, hard-rocking badass behind “One Night” or the moody, baroque soundscape of her debut album, “The Art of Flying,” yet on her new single, “XTC,” she shifts into DJ D’Arcy, the re-arranger and beat-maker who has been making rounds across the NYC techno and house circuit.

Grounded in an undeniable pop lyrical structure, the song finds her operating at peak sensual capacity, driven by heat, instinct, and a liberating loss of inhibition.

The accompanying music video, directed by Genevieve Andrews, with cinematography by Dan Debrey and produced by Ilias Kyriakides, translates that carnal energy down with stark, cinematic visuals.

Set against dim strobes, thick smoke, and dark grey studio fog, the video sidesteps standard club tropes to focus almost entirely on physical proximity. Extreme macro close-ups of skin, hands, and faces capture the quiet sparks of contact, intercutting tender moments between D’Arcy and co-star Katja Golde with wide shots of a hazy dancefloor.

The sweaty energy of the dancefloor transitions into the warm, candlelit intimacy of a quiet bedroom, where sexual tension builds frame by frame. This tender atmosphere shatters like a fever dream as the bedroom transforms into a crime scene. As one figure sinks into the mattress like descending through a portal, a brief flash reveals the two protagonists locked in a bloody embrace.

Returning to reality, shots of the bloodied bed reveal a panicked D’arcy fleeing into the night. As she runs down empty city streets, she pauses in total shock to look down at her stained hands and a bloody knife.

Beyond the immediate shock value, the visual narrative carries a visceral metaphor for the emotional desolation that often is left in the wake of situationships. While “XTC” celebrates the thrill of seduction, the sudden shift to a blood-soaked crime scene exposes the latent peril of unrequited intimacy. Katja’s disappearance leaves D’Arcy holding the metaphorical wreckage.
