Fans Are Craving Realness Over Perfection, New Ballantine’s Study Finds

As the live music landscape becomes increasingly polished and performance-led, new global research from Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky suggests fans are craving something far less curated. According to a new study commissioned by the brand, authenticity has become the defining factor in how audiences connect with artists, with 9 in 10 respondents naming “realness” as the most important element of the modern music experience.

The research, conducted across 9,003 music fans in nine countries, paints a picture of a growing disconnect between audiences and the highly produced nature of contemporary live performance. Statistics are taken from research conducted by Censuswide in May 2026 among music fans of legal drinking age across the UK, U.S., India, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile. While spectacle and precision have long dominated arena stages and social media feeds alike, fans are now leaning towards spontaneity and emotional honesty over perfection.

Among the key findings, 84 per cent of respondents said unexpected or unscripted moments are what make live music memorable, while 60 per cent described performance itself as the most powerful way to connect with an artist. Elsewhere, one in three said that seeing an authentic performance inspires them to be more themselves.

At the same time, barriers to connection remain. Four in ten fans believe overly scripted shows are preventing genuine artist-audience relationships, while rising ticket prices continue to lock many people out of live music altogether, with one in three respondents saying affordability is a major obstacle.

The findings arrive as Ballantine’s announces a new global partnership with COLORSxSTUDIOS, the influential music platform known for its stripped-back performances and focus on artistic individuality. Building on Ballantine’s long-running True Music platform, the collaboration aims to champion more intimate and unfiltered experiences for fans around the world.

The partnership will launch this month at TONES of Madrid, a multi-day music event running from 26–28 May 2026. Headlining the programme on 27 May are Argentinian duo CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso, whose boundary-pushing performances and raw stage presence have earned them an international following. They’ll be joined by Spanish acts Blanco Palamera, Lua De Santana and Merca Bae.

With phone-free concerts, livestream interactions and looser performance formats becoming increasingly common, the industry appears to be shifting away from perfection and towards something more immediate: connection.
