The Black British Theatre Awards are back for 2026

We’re excited to share the news that The Black British Theatre Awards are returning to the West End this October.

The annual ceremony, now in its eighth year, will take place at the Piccadilly Theatre on Sunday 25 October 2026, bringing together performers, creatives, and productions from across the UK to celebrate Black excellence both onstage and behind the scenes.

Awards ceremonies can sometimes feel like a lot of famous people congratulating each other, but the BBTAs have a much more important purpose. They do not simply hand out trophies. They create visibility, recognise work that has too often been overlooked, and make sure the next generation of Black theatre-makers can see that there is a place for them in this industry.

That representation is everything. Theatre is at its best when the stories being told, and the people telling them, reflect the world outside the auditorium. The BBTAs are a celebration of how much extraordinary Black talent is already shaping British theatre, while also serving as a reminder that recognition, representation, and opportunity should never be taken for granted.

While there has undoubtedly been progress, it is still far too rare to see Black performers leading major West End productions, particularly Black women. There is no shortage of talent, as anyone paying attention to British theatre already knows. What is still missing is the same consistency of opportunity, visibility, and investment afforded to their white counterparts. That is exactly why organisations and events like the BBTAs are so essential.

Last year’s ceremony featured performances from Alexandra Burke, then leading I’m Every Woman, and The Kingdom Choir, with Beverley Knight among the winners. This year’s awards will once again recognise achievements across performance, creative work on and off stage, emerging talent, outstanding contribution, Best Musical, and Best Play, with presenters and performers still to be announced.

The ceremony is sponsored by ATG Entertainment, in partnership with Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Global Creatures, with support from Playful Productions.

Omar F. Okai, Founder and Executive Director of the BBTAs, and one of the loveliest people I’ve met on the UK theatre scene, said the organisation is delighted to return for another year of celebrating ‘extraordinary talent, creativity, and impact’.

He added that ‘The Black British Theatre Awards exist not only to recognise excellence but also to champion visibility, representation, and opportunity within our industry.’

Nominations open on 1 July and close on 31 August, giving audiences, theatre professionals, and supporters the chance to nominate the individuals and productions they believe have made an outstanding contribution to British theatre over the past year.

The shortlist, ticket information, presenters, and special guest performances will be revealed in the coming months. Keep an eye on their website and follow them on Instagram for updates!

The Black British Theatre Awards take place at the Piccadilly Theatre on Sunday 25 October 2026 at 7.30pm.
