Joseph Trem releases new single ‘Freud’

Joseph Trem has released his new single ‘Freud’, an exploration of anxiety, vulnerability and emotional disconnect. The track marks the latest release from the emerging singer-songwriter, who has been building a catalogue of emotionally driven songs since his 2023 debut, ‘Ruminations’.

Trem has since released singles including ‘Alcea’, ‘Keeper’ and ‘Used To Love Me’, developing a sound that moves between intimate piano-led songwriting and expansive, atmospheric pop. His early work has received praise from publications including Stereo Stickman and A&R Factory, while his latest release continues his focus on personal experiences and emotional themes.

‘Freud’ opens with Trem’s voice and piano before gradually expanding into a fuller arrangement. The track draws on delicate, minimal production, with the influence of artists such as Bon Iver present in its sound, while Trem’s vocal performance remains at the centre of the recording.

The single was recorded using an intentionally free-flowing approach, with notes, phrases and vocal inflections left to develop naturally during the performance. As the arrangement builds, the music becomes increasingly expansive, reflecting the emotions at the heart of the song.

Speaking about the track, Trem explains: “‘Freud’ represents someone who is deeply anxious and trying to communicate that anxiety to someone they really care about, someone who may not fully understand it.

“Sometimes, whether in a romantic or platonic relationship, the other person simply can’t relate to what you’re feeling.

“The song gradually becomes more overwhelming, mirroring the way those emotions build over time. I’m incredibly proud of how the track turned out because it’s an example of the music doing most of the talking, while the lyrics provide the context.”

With ‘Freud’, Trem continues to develop the sound and songwriting approach established across his releases to date, offering another personal entry in his growing catalogue.
