Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt are rumoured to be working together again on Tarantino’s suspected last film, The Movie Critic. The pair have worked together on two projects before, the 2009 avenge-seeking Inglorious Bastards and the star-studded Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, giving Pitt his first Oscar for best supporting actor.

While not much has been revealed about the upcoming movie, there are a few known details. Tarantino has shared that the film is set in 1977 California and ‘is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous.’

It seems that Pitt may not be the leading man in this final project. Tarantino shared that the star of The Movie Critic will be a new leading man around 35 years old. Maybe we’ll get to see Pitt shine as a supporting character this time around. The film is set for release in 2025, with no sign of filming having started yet.

Tarantino’s Failed Casino Project

Let’s hope this film actually gets made, unlike his attempt at making his own version of the James Bond film Casino Royale.

Just imagine what that would have been like through the eyes of Tarantino! We all know how much work and research he puts into his movies. He would have been hitting the live casino for roulette table inspiration. Discovering all the different games and versions available and implementing them into the movie. Not to mention, there would probably be a few trips to Vegas, Macau and other casino resort destinations.

Tarantino is well known for being linked with directing movies that never come to fruition. He has been linked with making a Rambo revamp, a Pulp Fiction prequel, a Star Trek spin off, not to mention the countless times we have heard he’s making a new Kill Bill volume. Let’s hope this one doesn’t fall by the waste side like these ones and that we can celebrate his work one last time.

Tarantino’s Retirement

So, on to Tarantino’s retirement. In 2021, he said he would retire after making his tenth film. Tarantino made his film debut with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, which was soon followed by the Golden Globe-winning and culturally renowned Pulp Fiction in 1994. His 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, inspired by the Manson murders, made a massive impact on the film industry.

Some argue that technically speaking, he’s actually done 11 films over the years. Tarantino insists it’s only 10, as he considers the Kill Bill duology to be one single film split in two.

He’s been working as a film director for the last 30 years, bringing film fanatics some of their favourite stories over those years. Tarantino says, in his opinion, “I know film history, and from here on in, filmmakers do not get better”, suggesting he believes his film progression has come to a halt.

Tarantino feels he’s had a long career in the film industry, saying in past interviews, “At the same time, working for 30 years doing as many movies as I’ve done, it’s not as many as other people, but that’s a long career. That’s a really long career.” The Django director now lives in Israel with his wife, Daniella Pick, and their three-year-old son, and he thinks he’s given this job “everything I have, every single solidarity thing I have.”

As more details on The Movie Critic are anticipated, influences of Tarantino’s creative streak are everywhere. More often in film, that trend of following a nonlinear narrative is seen to be growing and becoming increasingly popular. Films such as Oppenheimer and the Knives Out series have been inspired by that loose structure birthed in Tarantino’s work.

Taking a Step Back

If you’re a huge Quentin Tarantino fan, don’t worry, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. He’ll just be taking a step back from directing films. Tarantino has said he’d love to continue working in similar industries, perhaps working on books and TV shows, so you are sure to see his work in the coming years.
