Spin the Fashion Wheel: Roulette-Inspired Fashion Trends

From highbrow designers to off-the-rack stores, fashion is always looking to make an impact with fresh and unique inspirations. With vibrant colours, numerical motifs, and circular patterning, let’s take a look at some roulette-inspired fashion trends.

Colours

The game of roulette is known for being a classic, high-end game. Whilst many luxury-inspired pastimes stick to cool neutrals, roulette has bright, clashing colours of red, black, and green, as well as bold-coloured chips. With the introduction of online roulette games, the colour story has continued to evolve. For example, the Spin Till You Win betting game incorporates oranges, magenta, gold, blue and purple as well as the classic red, black, and green. What this goes to highlight is that bright, bold block colours ease out the playfulness of the game, without compromising on the high-end traditions.

With this in mind, the same logic can be applied to fashion. Whilst some designers favour beige, browns, pastels, and natural shades, the colour trends of 2024 are far more bold. Gucci in particular has been spearheading cherry red tones, as has Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and Bottega Veneta. These collections also have items in different shades of green – from sage to pistachio. Think a green structured dress, accented by a red purse, and offset with subtle and understated jewellery. This may be an unusual colour combination, but the roulette-inspired palette has been eating up runways, fashion shows, and high street stores this year.

Numbers

Another key motif of roulette is the numbers used during the game. This is the amount people bet, the numbers they place their bets on the table, and the winning number that the ball lands on when the wheel is spun. These numbers have begun popping up throughout modern fashion trends, from being used as oversized graphic prints to understated numbering on sports and athleisure wear.
As mentioned by Women’s Health Magazine, sportswear has taken over fashion throughout the years. But, perhaps the biggest trend at the moment is sports jerseys. For some, this is cotton t-shirts with the detailing of a brand, inspired by the designs of a football, cricket, or American football team. For others, this’ll take you to the thrift shops, searching for vintage baseball or basketball jerseys. What these have in common is the use of numbering on the front and back of the tops, which either signifier a specific player, or have a key meaning for the brand and designer.

Shapes

When you think of roulette, chances are you think of the roulette wheel, the small ball, or even the betting chips. These rounded and spherical shapes almost exemplify the ongoing nature of the gameplay, as well as drawing out nuances such as the cyclical nature of luck and fortune.

Of course, circles and dots have been used in fashion for centuries. Whilst it was once a divisive print in the mind of Elle Magazine, 2024 signified the return of the polka dot in its coolest iteration. The humble polka dot was seen in collections by Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabbana, and Balmain, taking the print away from old-hat, cutesy or jarring items, and moving towards a fresh, sultry and seductive future.
As you can see, fashion inspiration can be found even in the most unique places, such as roulette. In using bold colour combinations, incorporating sportswear-like numerical designs, and reinvigorating circular patterns, this can breathe new life into any wardrobe.
