Zhiyan Li: Championing the Female Gaze in Independent Cinema

In an independent film landscape increasingly hungry for diverse voices and fresh perspectives, producer Zhiyan Li is helping redefine storytelling through her unique blend of cross-cultural aesthetics, visual innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the female gaze. Her work not only expands the visual and emotional range of independent cinema, but also champions a new generation of women producers in the industry.

Li, whose academic and professional journey spans China, South Korea, and the U.S., brings a truly global sensibility to her productions. This unique background allows her to seamlessly merge Eastern spatial aesthetics and emotional subtlety with Western cinematic structure, offering directors a rich tapestry of visual approaches.

“My work contributes to the growth of U.S. independent filmmaking by expanding both its visual language and its narrative perspective,” Li explains. “I support directors in building visual approaches that feel fresh yet emotionally grounded, whether through mirror-based symbolism in Ligeia, handheld impressionistic movement in LIMINAL, or psychologically intimate domestic environments in the film, Fragile.”

As a female producer, Li is particularly passionate about female-driven stories and the contemporary female gaze, a perspective she applies across genres, from festival-bound shorts to viral vertical dramas. “I approach production as a creative collaborator, ensuring that directors can take risks, experiment with form, and explore more diverse voices,” she emphasizes.

Bringing Vision to Life: A Deep Dive into Ligeia

One striking example of Li’s collaborative genius is her work on Ligeia, a modern feminist reinterpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic gothic tale. The director’s ambition was to shift the narrative’s perspective, traditionally told through a male lens, to center Ligeia’s subjectivity.

“To achieve this, I worked with her to build a visual language that centered Ligeia’s subjectivity, placing the story firmly within her emotional perspective rather than the husband’s,” Li recounts. This involved meticulous design of intimate Victorian interiors, coordinating practical makeup for a complex transformation sequence, and shaping a performance style that allowed the character’s inner world to guide the visual rhythm.

A key element of Ligeia’s distinctive identity was the use of breaking the fourth wall. “These direct looks into the camera created a sense of confrontation and agency, allowing Ligeia to reclaim narrative power,” Li notes. Recognizing the bold and unconventional nature of these choices, Li’s crucial role was to protect them through careful scheduling, budgeting, and on-set coordination, ensuring the film’s strong and distinctive artistic vision could flourish.

The Rise of Women Producers: A Shift in Industry Dynamics

The film industry has historically been male-dominated, particularly in the producing role. However, Li is part of a growing movement of women producers who are reshaping the landscape. She attributes this rise to a confluence of factors.

“Women producers bring a sensitivity to emotional detail, interpersonal awareness, and collaborative culture, which aligns with the growing demand for authentic and inclusive storytelling,” Li said. The advent of digital platforms and short-form vertical content has also lowered traditional barriers, empowering more women creators to shape stories.

“Women in production also fight for respectful and equitable workplaces, which strengthens the entire industry,” she adds. “As the landscape shifts toward valuing character depth and diverse perspectives, women producers are increasingly recognized as essential voices rather than exceptions.”

Versatility Across Formats and Visions

Li’s creative versatility is evident across her diverse portfolio. In LIMINAL, where the director sought a poetic exploration of identity through stillness and emotional tension, Li leveraged her background as a director and cinematographer. “I helped translate the director’s ideas into a practical visual plan built around handheld movement and a restrained, contemplative atmosphere,” she explains, guiding production decisions with a sensitivity to how actors respond to space and rhythm.

Similarly, on Come As You Are, a micro-short exploring modern relationships and female independence with humor and subtlety, Li’s perspective as a woman and her understanding of directing and cinematography proved invaluable. She helped shape an environment where the humor and emotional honesty felt natural, ensuring the character’s inner experience remained central to the visual language.

Beyond the traditional film festival circuit, Li has also made significant waves in the burgeoning global market of vertical TV dramas, producing high-engagement series for platforms like Drama Box, ShortMax, and NetShort. Titles such as The Mafia Boss’s Runaway Bride and Flash Marriage at 40: My Second Chance have collectively garnered millions of views, demonstrating her ability to adapt cinematic storytelling to mobile-first formats and engage a vast global audience.

With new cross-cultural and female-led projects continually in development, Zhiyan Li embodies a rare combination of artistic intuition, multicultural sensitivity, and production precision. She stands as a pivotal figure in challenging traditional cinematic norms, expanding the emotional and visual frontiers of independent filmmaking, and ensuring that diverse female voices resonate powerfully on screens worldwide.
