18 Questions With introduces 1883 readers to the brightest artists, actors, creatives and beyond. From childhood memories and guilty pleasures to their latest ventures and upcoming projects, our goal is to bring you closer to the people who inspire and entertain us.
Tolou moves with intention. A multidisciplinary artist whose work sits at the intersection of music, identity, and intuition, she has built a world that values presence over performance and honesty over perfection. Her new album, Energy, is a reflection of that ethos. At its heart, the record is about reclaiming the self, about recognising that even when love fractures and confidence falters, your energy remains your truth.
Spiritual, raw, and unapologetically feminine, Energy unfolds as a conversation between body, mind, and intuition. It listens closely to instinct, honours desire, and trusts the quiet power of inner knowing. Rather than searching outward for fulfilment, the album turns inward, tracing a journey of self-return that feels both grounding and liberating. It is for anyone who has lost themselves in love and found their way back, softer, stronger, and more alive.
Outside of music, Tolou’s presence continues to expand. She has starred in the Norwegian drama series Saving the F Planet*, collaborated with brands including Hugo Boss, L’Oréal, and H&M, and played major festival stages, including Norway’s Øya.
Tolou sits down with 1883 to chat about Energy, the last book she read, and her go-to karaoke song.
What’s one exciting thing that happened to you this week?
I traveled to India for the first time and just came off a 45-minute set at Lollapalooza India in Mumbai!
What was the last thing you read?
The Artist Way by Julia Cameron! I read it before and it was life changing, so I wanted to start it again in the new year.
Favourite memory growing up?
Performing on stage. That was always my happiest moment—whether it was with my brother’s metal band or singing in church. That was my favorite place to be. There was this yearly festival we used to play at, and it felt like a dream.
Where was the last place you travelled to?
I just came from Paris. I had rehearsals there with my choreographer and dancers, and I also went to a fashion show for Kwame Adusei.
What was the last thing that made you laugh?
I laughed really hard at my mom on the phone yesterday. She has the funniest comments sometimes – with a little bit of shade, haha. I definitely get my sense of humor from her.
What’s your nighttime ritual?
The one thing that stays consistent in a busy travel schedule is my skincare. I love putting on all my serums and creams so my skin is glowy. And sometimes I’ll drink a cup of tea to calm my voice.
Who would be on your dream dinner party guest list?
I’m such a music lover – Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Lana Del Rey, Sade, Frank Ocean, Wizkid, Beyoncé.
Favourite quote from a film or TV show?
“Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?”
What a Girl Wants (2003)
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
“Feeling Good” by Nina Simone. It’s one I love singing. Once I did “Shallow” with my big brother in front of our whole family, and we’d never heard him sing before, so that was amazing.
Favourite item in your closet?
A vintage Versace jacket I found in Paris. I love how you can go treasure hunting in vintage stores and find such unique, high-quality pieces. It’s so fun.
What is the major throughline on your debut album Energy?
The major throughline of the album is learning to trust and embody your own energy. Moving with faith, confidence, and presence rather than fear.
What were your favourite moments from recording the project?
Traveling to Atlanta and making “Into Me” and “Body.” Working with the legend Tricky Stewart was incredibly inspiring. He’s literally the king of crossover records and has worked extensively with artists I admire so much, like Rihanna and Beyoncé.
Tell us about what it was like to star in the Norwegian series Saving the F* Planet – would you like to do more acting?
I loved it! It was a great experience that came very naturally to me. It’s so fun being able to portray another character outside of yourself.
It actually reminds me a lot of writing a song and having to tap into different emotions. In this role, I played a fisherman who had her own boat, which was such a unique experience. I would definitely love to do it again.
How did you celebrate on the album’s release day?
I traveled to India! So definitely a nice dinner with chicken korma.
What’s your favourite song on Energy and why?
I’d have to say “A Little Bit Sad.” I wrote it a week after a tough breakup, and it led to me traveling to L.A. and eventually getting signed. I love the message of hope – that as long as you have yourself, you’ll be good.
What’s your preferred album format – vinyl, CD, tap streaming platforms?
CDs are so cool, but I definitely love that streaming makes it available everywhere and accessible to everyone.
What’s on your rider for a show?
Nuts, fruit, water, ginger, honey, and tea.
Finally, what is one thing you would like to manifest for yourself and why?
A sold-out world tour because performing live is where I feel most alive, and connecting with fans and sharing that energy around the world is my dream.
Tolou’s debut album Energy is out now.
