“Broken Boys Make Me Feel Magic”: Allegra Falls Back in Love (Against Her Better Judgement) on ‘Romantic’

Allegra is back, and she’s not even a little bit sorry about her taste in “broken boys.” Today, the London-based pop artist releases ‘Romantic,’ the lead single from her forthcoming Unreleased EP, out 28th August, alongside a visualiser that gives the track’s giddy, club-ready energy a home to live in.

‘Romantic’ is an instantly catchy anthem built on a lyric that could double as Allegra’s artistic mission statement: “There’s something about broken boys / That makes me feel magic.” Rather than nursing old wounds, she leans into the chaos of new love, delivering an uplifting, feel-good anthem for anyone who’s ever fallen for someone they probably shouldn’t have.

Speaking about the meaning behind the track, Allegra says the song is about refusing to let heartbreak kill her belief in the fairy tale:

“Romantic is a song that I wrote about being the girl who believes in the fairy tale. A girl who doesn’t turn away the broken things but falls in love with them and believes in them. You know it might hurt you but just maybe if it all works out it will all be worth it. It’s like the Santa line….. You’re told the fairy tale as a child and then as you grow up you learn the ‘truth’ but I still choose to believe in the magic and hope.”

The single marks the first taste of Unreleased EP, a five-track collection that pulls back the curtain on songs Allegra had been sitting on for the past year. Too personal to be shelved but never quite the right fit for her last project, 2024’s Red, the tracks have now found a home of their own. Following ‘Romantic,’ the EP moves through the punchy, self-assured ‘Feel Sorry For Ya,’ the darker ‘Kiss Some Other Girls,’ the independence anthem ‘Dancing Alone,’ and closes with the house-inspired ‘Sober.’

As Allegra puts it: “This EP is made up of all the songs that I have written over the year, that still run in my head. They didn’t quite fit with the concept of my previous ‘Red EP’, but I always felt that they were too special to not be released and now I believe it’s the perfect time, so I created a project especially for them….. the ‘Unreleased EP’ which I am equally proud of.”

It’s the latest move from an artist who’s spent the last few years quietly building one of the UK’s most consistent pop track records – from a Music Week Commercial Pop Chart-topper with ‘Wildfire,’ to collaborations with the likes of DJ Alok, Tiësto, R3HAB and Tobtok, to nearly 6 million streams on ‘Round and Round.’ With Unreleased EP landing 28th August via Radikal Records, ‘Romantic’ suggests her most emotionally candid chapter yet is only just getting started.
