The Lobster

The lobster is a movie about a man who has 45 days to find a partner, or he will be turned into a lobster. It’s a dark comedy, but it’s also a love story. A fascinating character study, of loneliness and man’s need for companionship, definitely something to cry over during date night. We recommend you check this one out if you’re a fan of dark comedies.

Moonlight

This film follows the life of an African-American boy from childhood to adulthood. It’s about his struggle with his sexuality and his family. A LBGTQ friendly film that rightfully won the Academy Award for best picture. As it captured human sexuality within a marginalized group.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:

A couple undergoes a procedure that erases their memories of each other—but then they start to remember things again, which causes problems in their relationship. This movie is both funny and sad—it deals with some heavy topics like heartbreak and mental illness but also has some lighthearted moments where you’ll laugh out loud at what the characters say or do!

American Psycho:

Bit of an odd one out and risque option. American Psycho is about a wealthy Wall Street executive who goes on a killing spree after losing his job during the recession in the 1980s—and no one seems to notice or care! This movie is both darkly humorous and terrifyingly realistic at times—you’ll never look at an ATM machine in quite the same way again!

Her:

I’m sure you’ve all heard of AI technology and its practical uses, but what about falling in love with one? Her is a beautiful movie about a lonely soul trying to rediscover love. The movie touches on complex topics on mental health, loneliness and isolation. This film puts personality before looks into a different perspective, in a very touching and romantic way, acted perfectly by Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johanssson.

Blue Valentine

No it’s not a French romantic film, but it’s as close as it gets for an English-speaking drama. Blue Valentine is not one for the weak hearted, as it captures the essence of falling in love and the breakdown of relationships. It’s as real as it gets on the list, and Ryan Gosling & Michelle Williams are truly captivating in delivering raw emotions that almost makes the movie feel like a documentary.

Lars and the other girl

Lars and the other girl is about a pathologically shy do-gooder, played by Ryan Gosling doing what he does best, playing quirky and unconventional characters. This film is another romantic film that deals with the effects of loneliness and isolation. Never has a man falling in love with a blow-up doll been so compelling and heartbreaking. So watch it with a true open mind.

The Big Sick

A strange-than-fiction story, featuring Kumail Nanjani, playing a fictionalised version of himself, recounting the story of how he and his wife met. Nanjani pays an Asian immigrant in America, with the story exploring his struggles to meet his familial expectation and traditional muslim background, against his quest to achieve the American dream as a comedian, and his relationship with his American girlfriend Emily.
