Australian singer-songwriter Gabriella Cilmi has marked her return with new single ‘Pure Love’, it’s her first major release following a period away from the spotlight. The track signals a renewed sense of direction for the artist, who stepped back from the industry after early commercial success.
Cilmi first rose to prominence at 16 with ‘Sweet About Me’, a global hit that led to widespread recognition and a string of high-profile performances. Her debut album Lessons To Be Learned established her internationally, followed by Ten and later the independently released The Sting. Despite this trajectory, she chose to withdraw from the public eye, citing the pressures associated with rapid success at a young age.
‘Pure Love’ represents a shift in both perspective and process. Written by Cilmi and produced by Peter Miles, the track was recorded live-to-tape at Middle Farm Studios in Devon, favouring a raw and unpolished sound. The production draws on a range of influences, from the soul traditions of Aretha Franklin to the blues intensity of Janis Joplin, while maintaining a contemporary sensibility.
Lyrically, the single reflects themes of self-acceptance and presence, with Cilmi describing it as a “homecoming” and a personal reminder to reconnect with the moment. The approach is notably more introspective, contrasting with the more commercial tone of her earlier releases.
Speaking more about the track, Gabriella said: “‘Pure Love’ is a homecoming record for me, it’s about coming home to yourself. To me this song really feels like a mantra of surrender and I wrote it as a reminder to get out of my head and back into the moment. I hope it can help others do the same.”
The song also arrives as Cilmi resumes live performances, including a recent appearance at KOKO in London. Further shows and festival appearances are expected to follow.
While ‘Pure Love’ does not attempt to replicate the chart-driven energy of her breakout years, it instead positions Gabriella Cilmi within a more self-directed phase of her career, focused on creative autonomy and a return to her musical roots.
