Sasha Joy is back with “Got You Something,” and honestly it doesn’t feel like a normal indie release. There’s a moment in here where you can tell she’s stopped guessing at her sound. She had good people in the room too. Sanga Toto produced it, whom she’s worked with for years. And Chab mastered it. That’s the Grammy guy, the one who did stuff for Daft Punk and Justin Timberlake. You can tell. The record sounds big without sounding fussed-over.
Critics over in the UK keep throwing her name around as one to watch. Yeah. After this song I get it. She’s not chasing whatever’s hot this week. She’s just going straight through the middle of it.
Everyone keeps saying they miss music that feels real. Actual playing. Actual feeling. Songs that were, you know, written. Sasha Joy is one of the few actually doing it. “Got You Something” sounds like soul music taking its next step.
