The clean girl has had a good run. Four years, roughly, of slicked buns and glazed skin and lips lined with forensic precision, a look sold as effortless that took a full drawer of product to achieve.

It isn’t necessarily grunge, and it certainly isn’t about abandoning your makeup bag. If anything, the irony is that looking perfectly imperfect can require its own degree of precision. The difference is that the finished result isn’t supposed to look painstakingly constructed.
Start With Skin, Not Perfection
Messy girl makeup doesn’t need a completely flawless canvas. Instead of layering full coverage foundation underneath the look, let freckles, texture and a little redness remain visible. The Lip Line Has Left the Chat
The new lip is stained, kissed off and deliberately indistinct. If the clean girl loved a meticulously overlined mouth, this one has forgotten where the edges are and is better for it.
