The latest in “ugly” fashion trends

Fashion is a funny thing. We often find that styles come and go and come back again, the 80s and 90s fashions are making a serious comeback and a number of more questionable trends are becoming mainstream.

Now the most beautiful thing about fashion is that it can really be whatever you want it to be, you can dress however you like and in whatever makes you happiest. But here are some subjectively “ugly” fashion trends that are gaining in popularity.

Huge glasses

We all remember the huge, thick-framed geek glasses that were massively popular in the early 2010s and maybe you remember scoffing at this trend? But glasses are still an important fashion piece and fashionistas everywhere are using them to make a statement. And getting glasses is easier than ever now that you can get your prescription eyeglasses online but you do not need to be near or long-sighted to rock a pair of specs, get yourself some plain glass lenses to use purely as a fashion piece. The trends we are seeing creeping up are the old-school aviators that were the height of fashion in the 70s and 80s as well as large round glasses that have evolved from the popular Harry Potter glasses that took off when the movies were released.

Tie-dye

One of the many retro trends that are making a comeback is tie-dye. Tie-dye, like most other prints and graphics, has had its fair share of resurges like in the 70s and the again in 90s. It has been gaining in popularity again since about 2019 and is now everywhere you look. Although you can buy ready-made tie-dyed clothes, many people choose to do their own at-home tie-dye which can be a great way to repurpose old or second-hand items. During lockdown, everyone on TikTok was trying DIY tie-dye on just about everything they owned, which is possibly one of the reasons it has grown so much in popularity.

Loafers

Another popular 90s style is the chunky loafer which you will have seen all over 90s sitcoms like Friends. Once considered to be too formal and possibly an old person shoe, loafers are becoming more stylish and more casual. This could be due to the comfort and ease of slipping on a pair of loafers, as lockdown saw a massive demand for different varieties of chic loungewear. Chunky loafers are a great way to add a bit of height without having to sacrifice your comfort!

Neon

Clothes shops are getting more and more colorful these days and we are moving further away from the popular neutral tones of the early 2000s. Neon colors are back with a vengeance. This trend may be considered ugly because it can be very hard to pull off – it is either super fun and cheerful or way too intense. If you want to hop on the neon trend, it can be a little daunting to go for such bright colors, so a great way to ease yourself in is to experiment with some neon accessories over a more neutral outfit.
